The hierarchy of titles: navigate through the text!

Situation

Using my screen reader, I can't easily navigate the document I'm viewing. I can't move from section to section because the document wasn't structured with the right tools in the writing software.

Information

When designing a document, you need to think about how to organize the different sections properly, using headings at different levels.

Headings help organize ideas in order of importance. It is essential that headings reflect both the content of the paragraphs and the structure of the document.

On the other hand, the hierarchy of titles facilitates the use of technical aids for users with disabilities, and allows for better understanding by all readers.

Finally, it helps improve search engine ranking.

Our recommendations

Use your editor's heading function to structure your document, from heading 1 to heading 6.

Stick to a consistent order. Level jumps, such as going from a level 2 title to a level 6 title, are not recommended.

Do not create titles with manual formatting (font size, bold, capitalization, etc.) based solely on aesthetics.
