Images (3/3) – Detailed description: tell me what I should see

Situation

I am visually impaired, I use text-to-speech to help me read textual content. I have just received an email entitled “Incomplete file”, inviting me to redo my registration by following all the steps of the procedure, to the end. The link in the email takes me to a web page to finalize my registration. Apart from the title: “Procedure for compiling the expert file”, there is just an image, the alternative of which is an exact repeat of the title of the page. I'm guessing all the information is inside the image. But without a detailed description, I don't have access to this informative content.

I'm completely lost and I don't know what to do, especially since the submission deadline is the next day.

Information

When using complex images (poster, graph, infographic, etc.), you must insert a detailed description afterwards. It makes images accessible to visually impaired or blind people.

This is a text version of the image which, unlike alternative texts, will be readable by all visitors.

Without a detailed description, people browsing using voice synthesis will only have the information contained in the textual alternative, which, remember, must remain short and precise.

Our recommendations

  • The detailed description must include all of the information conveyed by the complex image.
  • The detailed description should be easy to find compared to the corresponding image. It must be placed in the immediate vicinity of it.
