Information and colors, dangerous connections

 Situation

I am unable to link a graph to its legend because I have difficulty distinguishing the colors used.

 Information

Color perception is not universal: 8% of men have color discrimination problems. Information should therefore not be carried solely by a color code.

 Our recommendations

  • To guarantee readability, combine a color code with additional distinguishing elements (hatching, letter, arrow)
  • Visibly attach the legend to the graphs or provide a textual description as an alternative (example)
  • Keep in mind that a bad choice of color (too similar to each other, or too close to the background color) limits the readability of a graph for everyone.
