In 1492, Christopher Columbus opened the way for European exploration of America.
The quest for gold and honours was accompanied by myths and legends which helped to forge a collective imagination whose names are sometimes perpetuated even in toponymy: the Amazons of Brazil, the giants of Patagonia, the dog-headed cannibals of the Caribbean, etc.
Following the tradition that each monster guards a treasure, these hostile and marvelous beings recognized in the New World would protect marvelous places, such as Atlantis, the Earthly Paradise, the cities of gold linked to El Dorado, or even the Fountain of Youth.
The land beyond the ocean, beyond the horizon, Terra incognita, has made generations of explorers dream in search of adventure and riches, predisposed to recognize ancient myths within an unknown nature.
