This initiative is part of a national movement to combat gender stereotypes still present in the fields of mathematics and computer science. The objective is clear: to enable young women to envision themselves in higher education and scientific careers by providing them with concrete and inspiring role models.
Throughout the day, participants had the opportunity to interact with role models—engineers, doctoral candidates, and students—whose career paths illustrate the diversity of possible trajectories. A videoconference presentation by the honorary president of the Women and Mathematics association further enriched these discussions.
The event brought together many stakeholders from the University of Reunion Island, including President Jean-François Hoarau, IUT Director Olivier Marc, ESIROI Director Richard Lorion, as well as the IREM and IREM teams. The mathematics IA-IPR and the organizing teachers also contributed to the success of the day.
Scientific and community partners, including the Women and Mathematics association and the regional APMEP, have contributed their expertise and commitment to equal opportunities.
At the heart of the messages conveyed:
- Scientific skills are not gendered;
- Career choices must be free and informed;
- Representation plays a crucial role in career paths;
- The university is a space for openness, ambition, and success.
Recognized at the national level and tested since 1987, this system is proving to be an effective lever for sparking vocations and promoting greater diversity in scientific fields.
By hosting this event, the University of Reunion Island reaffirms its commitment to equality, student success and opening up possibilities for all.
