Description of the WEU
From its beginnings, talking cinema will sing. In the process, it will dance. Then the musical comedy will position itself as a determining style in the history of this new and specific language. Unquestionably carried by Broadway shows and inextricably linked to the history of the latter which began shortly after the Civil War, its specific version will become an unsurpassable spearhead of the genre. There will be musical films sung and danced in Europe and even in India. Nevertheless, Hollywood production will remain until the 1980s, a sort of tuning fork (if one dares say so).
The end of the big studio system, motivated by competition law, brings with it the end of a certain way of conceiving the genre.
New social aspects will appear in the genre, which will no longer be limited to a "happy ending". The musical film deals with serious subjects with lightness or not. In addition to the love story, there is death, disappointment, segregation and exclusion, rock n'roll. West Side Story, Grease, Sweet Charity, Bob Fosse (Cabaret, All that jazz), Blues Brothers and other Saturday night fever, constitute a separate page in the history of cinema.
