Description of the WEU

Introduction to language and culture: Portuguese

The course is intended for a beginner audience who wants to discover the Portuguese language and the cultures associated with it. Portuguese is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world, with more than 240 million people from countries in Europe, America, Africa and Asia.

Learning Portuguese means opening a window on the Portuguese-speaking world, the diversity of its human and cultural riches, and introducing a new map into your professional career. Indeed, Portuguese-speaking countries are booming. There are opportunities in Portugal, a new land of immigration for Europeans attracted by its culture and climate, and also in Portuguese-speaking African countries, mainly Mozambique and Angola, which are young nations in full construction and have significant foreign investment. Finally, Brazil is a tourist destination that still attracts as many thanks to its culture and its exuberant nature (like the Amazon rainforest and the Iguazu Falls).

At the academic level, Portugal and Brazil have large and prestigious universities to continue studies (for example, the University of Coimbra and the University of São Paulo).

Being an Indo-European language like French, Spanish or Italian, Portuguese is a relatively easy language to learn for French speakers. The structures are similar to Spanish, and the pronunciation is close to French.

In the first level of this course, the learner will be familiarized with the structure of the language to use it in simple communication situations, in order to be able to introduce yourself and talk about yourself. The four skills will be developed: reading and listening comprehension, as well as written and oral expression. The educational content is unique and specifically adapted to the target audience, based on real texts and videos. Collaborative learning of vocabulary and grammar will be encouraged through group activities, simulations and fun exercises. The learner will also have a first glimpse of the cultural diversity of the Portuguese-speaking world.

At the end of the course, the learner should be able to introduce himself/herself, hold a simple dialogue and understand everyday language statements.
