Description of the WEU

This UEO allows students to learn about the long history of the Indian Ocean and Reunion Island. For too long, this ignored history has not allowed us to grasp all of its complexity and interest, from the first waves of migration from Asia to Madagascar, then the discovery by the Arabs, then the Europeans, of this area of the South-West of the Indian Ocean. Through commented old maps, this UEO invites you on a real journey through time, embellished with a few episodes of a documentary series currently in production.

This unique course traces the long-term history of our island, from Dina Morgabin, Santa Appolonia, Mascareigne, Mascarin, England's forest, Bourbon or Bonaparte, before the name of La Réunion was imposed, and shows the different phases of its population, the development of the territory, the progressive creation of the current crossbreeding. Finally, it allows us to understand the current issues of our island and to consider the challenges of the 21st century.
