Training summary
The Bachelor of Technology in Social Careers (BUT CS) prepares students for careers that are developing in line with societal changes and the problems they face. These careers are currently in high demand in a challenging economic and social climate, marked by widening inequalities (in employment, housing, education, culture, health, the environment, etc.). They focus on personal and collective development, as well as reducing cultural, social, environmental, and territorial vulnerabilities.
The Social Work track within the Bachelor of Technology (BUT) in Social Services covers sectors of activity related to social action, child protection, family, and socio-professional integration. This BUT trains future professionals who work within public and private institutions operating in the field of social and medico-social intervention, providing social support to vulnerable populations.
Educational objectives and training opportunities
Educational goals :
The three-year program comprises 1800 hours of instruction, organized into lectures, tutorials, and practical work, in addition to 600 hours of supervised projects and internships: a 4-week introductory internship during the first year, an 8-week practical internship during the second year, and a 14-week professionalization internship in the third year.rd year. Internships allow students to gain an introduction to activities related to helping people or actions of collective interest.
Training opportunities:
At the end of 2023, the unemployment rate in Réunion, like in other overseas regions and departments, exceeded 20%, highlighting a persistent problem.
This limited access to employment has the direct consequence of impoverishing certain segments of the population of Réunion, since in 2024, the poverty rate in Réunion was 36%. It is therefore a territory that needs social workers, especially since, as throughout France, the retirement of many of them guarantees easier access to employment for young graduates.
Since the agreement signed in February 2024 between the University – the University Institute of Technology (IUT) of Reunion Island, the Reunion Island Region and the Association for Research and Training in Social Intervention – Indian Ocean Regional Institute of Social Work (ARFIS-OI IRTS), 10 students per year can prepare in addition to their Bachelor of Technology Social Careers Social Assistance Course (BUT CS AS) the State Diploma Social Work Assistant (DE ASS) which will allow entry into the job market with an additional qualification.
This adds an extra appeal to this course for Parcoursup candidates.
Advantages of the training
The BUT is the benchmark diploma for University Institutes of Technology (IUTs). By enrolling in a BUT program, students benefit from an integrated three-year curriculum, without further selection to obtain a bachelor's degree. The diploma is aligned with international standards and facilitates exchanges with foreign universities. Bachelor of Technology Parcours Éducation Spécialisée fully participates in the development of undergraduate professional training programs throughout the country. It is recognized as a Bachelor's degree under the decree on Professional Bachelor's degrees, comprising 180 ECTS credits.
A dual degree program is also offered in partnership with the Réunion Region and the Regional Institute of Social Work of Réunion (IRTS) to students selected for this program of excellence. Upon completion of their three years of training, they will be able to obtain:
The BUT Social Careers Social Assistance track + the State Diploma of Social Work Assistant (DE ASS).
