Training summary
The Bachelor of Technology in Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) trains specialists in risk management. Capable of identifying sources of hazards and associated undesired events in a cross-cutting and interdisciplinary manner, graduates deploy risk analysis and management methodologies in the fields of Occupational Health and Safety, industrial risk prevention, and risks of natural or societal origin.

Educational goals :
The student in BUT HSE develops five major skills enabling him to analyze and control occupational, technological and environmental risks, to respond to emergency and crisis situations, to lead the Quality, Health, Safety and Environment approach and to assist in management by supporting management in its QHSSE management.
Training opportunities:
The program is designed to be coherent and complementary to other programs within the same cycle. The BUT HSE is the only three-year undergraduate program in the region that trains prevention specialists.
On the one hand, there are the more specialized two-year post-baccalaureate BTS programs:
- In the field of quality: BTS (Advanced Vocational Diploma) in Quality in the Food and Bio-Industries (QIABI) – Saint-Paul IV High School
- In the field of the environment: BTS (Advanced Vocational Diploma) in Environmental Services (MSE) – Julien de Rontaunay Vocational High School in Saint-Denis and BTS (Advanced Vocational Diploma) in Water Management and Control (GEMEAU) – St. Paul Vocational High School
- In the health sector: BTS in Medical Biology Analysis (ABM) – Roland Garros High School, Le Tampon; BTS in Bioanalysis and Controls (BIOAC) – Saint-Paul IV High School
On the other hand, with the BUT Biological Engineering of the University Institute of Technology (IUT) of Reunion Island, and the Life Sciences and Chemistry degrees of the UFR Sciences and Technologies.
The two-year post-secondary programs mentioned above are primarily technical in nature, whereas the BUT HSE (Bachelor of Technology in Health, Safety, and Environment) trains middle managers who, in addition to technical qualifications, possess strong managerial and organizational skills valued by employers. Furthermore, the three-year university programs mentioned are initial training programs and, unlike the BUT HSE, do not offer the option of a work-study program.
Advantages of the training
The Bachelor of Technology (BUT) in Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) benefits from strong regional ties and close collaboration with industry stakeholders. The HSE BUT is the only three-year undergraduate program (Bac+3) in Réunion that trains health, safety, and environmental professionals. It is fully integrated into the challenges of sustainable development and the ecological transition, notably by offering courses adapted to natural hazards in tropical environments and the organization of civil defense in island settings. The option of work-study in the third year is also a major asset for enhancing employability. The program is based on a competency-based approach (CBA), emphasizing learning and assessment situations (LAS) to connect theory and practice. It features innovative teaching materials, including virtual reality equipment for analyzing risks at height, as well as mannequins and simulation tools for first aid training and the prevention of musculoskeletal disorders.
Furthermore, the BUT HSE opens up an extremely varied range of careers, from fieldwork to strategy, in industry as well as in the public sector:
- Operational prevention and field roles: HSE coordinator or technician, waste treatment technician…
- Middle management positions: coordinator Safety and Health Protection (SPS) on construction sites, QHSE/HSE officer or manager in SMEs or large groups, site environmental manager, occupational risk prevention advisor for local authorities
- Targeted expertise and support functions: CBRN decontamination technician (nuclear, radiological, bacteriological, chemical), cleaning sector manager, hydraulics engineer, energy recovery unit manager or ISO 9001/14001/45001 auditor in a consulting firm or certification body
- Civil intervention and security professions: fire officer, SDIS prevention inspector (accessible after the BUT or after a specific competition).

Course Description
The BUT HSE (Health, Safety, and Environment) is a professional training program with a competency-based approach to teaching. Practical training and real-world simulations account for 50% of the training hours. The program is structured around five core competencies, with the first four ranging from level 1 to 3 and the fifth from level 1 to 2.

Internships and supervised projects
The training includes:
- in 1st year: 160 hours of supervised project work and a four-week internship taking place in May
- in 2rd year: 240 hours of supervised project work and an eight-week internship taking place between April and May
- in 3rd year: 146 hours of supervised project work and the 3rdrd The year is completed through alternating periods of study and work.
