Training summary
The aim of legal training is to produce generalist lawyers who have mastered the main rules of legal ordering and reasoning.
The Bachelor's degree thus allows students to acquire a comprehensive and coherent set of knowledge and skills, both in matters of private law (civil law, business law, criminal law, etc.) and in matters of public law (constitutional law, administrative law, public international law, etc.). It also offers opportunities in other disciplinary fields, such as Political Science or the History of Political Ideas.
The career opportunities for legal training are real, local and diverse: lawyer, judge, notary, bailiff, corporate lawyer, civil servant.
Educational objectives and training opportunities
Educational goals :
A law degree allows one to hone legal reasoning and methodology skills and to build a solid general knowledge base.
The program corresponds to a generalist legal training, enabling the acquisition of fundamental knowledge and methods in the main legal disciplines.
It allows students to acquire the basic skills necessary for the practice of legal professions, as well as for preparing for the exams and competitions necessary for the practice of some of them (lawyer exam, judicial competition, administrative competitions, etc.).
Training opportunities:
The Law degree program attracts a very large number of students on the Tampon and Moufia campuses. It thus meets a real need among young people in Réunion.
This large number of students is linked to the wide variety of career opportunities offered by the legal sector in the region. The legal community in Réunion is actively recruiting, and university-level legal training remains its primary source of talent.
This professionalization of career paths is already a reality. Personal and Professional Projects (PPPs) are thus enjoying great success. It is set to intensify, particularly through the development of courses related to the ecological transition and sustainable development.
The Law degree aims to ensure the success of the greatest number, for example through personalized pathways in the first year.
Digital transition and learning English are integral parts of the training.
International exchanges are real: many foreign students, particularly from the Indo-Oceanic basin, are welcomed; conversely, several students from Reunion Island follow part of their Bachelor's degree abroad, notably through the ERASMUS+ program.
Advantages of the training
A law degree leads to real and varied career opportunities. University studies in law are the primary pathway to legal professions.
The study of law allows us to better understand the workings of our contemporary world and to train informed citizens.
A dual Law/CPGE (Preparatory Classes for the Grandes Écoles) degree program is also offered to students.

Course Description
A Bachelor of Laws degree provides students with fundamental knowledge in the main areas of law. This generalist program includes courses in both private law, covering its various aspects (civil law, business law, labor law, criminal law, civil procedure), and public law (constitutional law, administrative law, public finance, European law). The curriculum helps students understand the connection between law and its social, political, and economic context.
The teaching mainly takes the form of lectures. The core subjects are supplemented by tutorials.
Beyond the acquisition of knowledge, the emphasis is placed on the development of legal reasoning, on mastering legal methodology and on expression skills (writing skills and oral expression).
The Individualized Law Track 2 (PI2) program provides disciplinary and methodological reinforcement to improve success in the first year of the Bachelor's degree (L1). Students in this track will benefit from personalized support (methodology, enhanced tutoring, mock exams).
The Individualized Law Degree 3 (PI3) takes the form of a 2-year L1.
The Law degree with a preparatory course for the competitive entrance exams to the École Normale Supérieure (ENS D1) allows students to combine courses in Law (taught at the Faculty of Law and Economics) with courses at the Lycée Leconte de Liste. This program is designed to prepare students for the competitive entrance exams to the École Normale Supérieure (ENS) in Rennes.

Specific teaching methods
Internships and supervised projects
Students carry out Personal and Professional Projects (PPP) in their second and third years of undergraduate studies, which can take the form of internships (in administration, law firms, notary offices, companies, etc.).
These internships are supervised by teacher-researchers, acting as educational tutors.
Personal and professional projects can take other forms: participation in colloquiums or conferences, in eloquence competitions, for example.
Cost of training
Registration fees are set annually by the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Space and are available on our institution's website: Register at the University of Reunion
Expectations for admission to the training program
The following is expected of candidates for a Bachelor of Laws degree:
- Demonstrating strong written and oral communication skills that reflect excellent writing and public speaking abilities underscores the importance, for the legal field, of candidates having a mastery of the French language, both written and spoken. Law is a discipline where oral communication skills (pleading) and writing skills (drafting letters, legal documents, etc.) are fundamental. The precision required by legal reasoning means that candidates must have a strong command of... from the beginning (ab initio), the fundamentals of the language.
- Possessing the ability to understand, analyze, and synthesize a text: this requirement underscores the importance, for legal studies, of a candidate's capacity to "understand" written material. A law degree requires the combined analysis of numerous legal sources (constitutions, laws, regulations, international texts, case law, legal scholarship) which must be understood, contextualized, and potentially critiqued based on legal reasoning.
- Possessing logical and conceptual reasoning skills: this requirement highlights the importance, for the legal field, of a candidate's ability to produce a structured argument, even a relatively simple one, and to reason about concepts. A law degree does indeed require a certain capacity for abstraction, formal logic, and deduction.
- The ability to work independently and organize one's work: this expectation underscores the importance, for the legal field, of the candidate's capacity to work autonomously. The law degree program indeed allows for substantial personal organization and independent study. The structure is flexible: only a limited portion of the courses are mandatory and require the submission of assignments (tutorials).
- Being open to the world and possessing language skills: this expectation underscores the importance, for legal studies, of students having a sufficient level of proficiency in at least one foreign language, particularly English. The Bachelor of Laws program is necessarily situated within a European and global legal context, which requires the study of legal systems other than the national system, most often in a foreign language.
