Training summary

The Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering is a general degree offered by the University of Reunion Island that prepares students for careers in the building, construction, urban planning, and land development sectors. The program is structured around major current national and regional challenges related to sustainable development, energy consumption, and renewable energy. It provides a solid foundation of knowledge and skills in the scientific and technical fields relevant to these challenges, enabling graduates to develop appropriate solutions to these issues.

Educational objectives and training opportunities

Educational goals

The Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering takes three years to complete. The first year focuses on acquiring a solid foundation of the fundamental scientific principles and tools necessary to master before specializing. Specialization within the fields of Civil Engineering develops progressively in the second and third years, alongside the in-depth study of essential scientific concepts.

In their first year (L1), students follow a single course entitled "Construction and Land Planning". In addition to acquiring a solid scientific foundation, this first year also aims to allow students to discover the two specialization tracks that will be offered to them in their second and third years.

In the second and third years (L2 and L3), students must choose between two specialization tracks:

  • The Sustainable Buildings and Construction (BCD) program
  • The Urban Planning and Sustainable Territorial Development (UATD) program

Training opportunities

The Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering is a generalist degree with a dual scientific and technological focus, opening doors to the fields of construction, urban planning, land development, and environmental management. This program is central to the demographic and societal challenges currently facing the territory of Réunion (population growth, land scarcity, the island's insular nature, etc.). It enables students to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to provide innovative technical solutions to current challenges in the fields of construction and land development.

Graduates of the Civil Engineering degree from the University of Reunion Island are directly operational and ready to be recruited for technician and middle management positions both within public authorities operating in the fields of urban planning and land development and within private companies in the construction sector (engineering design offices, building companies, etc.).

Furthermore, further studies at the Master level are possible thanks to the two Master's programs also on the Tampon campus: the Master's in Civil Engineering and the Master's in City and Urban Environments, which are in perfect continuity with the two specialization tracks offered in the Bachelor's in Civil Engineering.

The solid foundation of knowledge and skills provided by the Civil Engineering degree also allows some students to continue their studies in other Master's specializations in France as well as in certain engineering schools.

Advantages of the training

The Civil Engineering degree at the University of Reunion Island is distinguished by its comprehensive and progressive training, which combines a solid scientific foundation, modern digital tools, and a strong focus on contemporary challenges in building and land-use planning. From the first year, students acquire cross-disciplinary skills in mathematics, physics, heat transfer, data processing, and digital tools, while being introduced to the principles of sustainable construction and urban planning. The program is further strengthened by offering two distinct tracks in the second and third years: one oriented towards the construction and building, with in-depth instruction in materials, structural strength, energy, and construction site management; the other geared towards urban planning and land development, integrating urban diagnosis, territorial planning, environmental law and public policies. The emphasis is placed on the BIM, GIS, programming and artificial intelligence It prepares students for the jobs of tomorrow, while developing their analytical skills and autonomy. Finally, the training is professionally oriented thanks to the emphasis placed on projects, the mandatory internship, and personalized support, thus facilitating integration into design offices and construction companies, as well as local authorities and development agencies.

Internships and supervised projects

A mandatory internship is scheduled in the third year of the Bachelor's degree, semester 6, lasting 8 hours. It aims to put the skills acquired into practice in a company, design office, local authority or research laboratory.

Supervised projects are gradually integrated from the second year of the Bachelor's degree (applied courses in construction and urban planning) and take on a stronger role in the third year with the completion of group projects (construction operation for the Sustainable Buildings and Constructions course; urban planning and design for the Sustainable Urban Planning and Territorial Development course).

Cost of training

Registration fees are set annually by the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Space and are available on our institution's website: Register at the University of Reunion Island (link: https://www.univ-reunion.fr/choisir-sa-formation/inscriptions/)
