Educational objectives and training opportunities

Educational goals :

The goal is to teach students:

  • tools for discourse analysis (texts and media narratives), analysis of still and moving images, and online ethnographic observation allow us to question and analyze media productions and communication phenomena within the public space.

The Information-Communication degree combines a professional focus with a research orientation.

The teaching team, which includes professionals from the region, offers students the opportunity to acquire pre-professional skills in journalism, communication, cultural and/or scientific mediation, and in the field of research.

It is :

  • Acquire journalistic writing and investigative techniques across all media
  • Develop and monitor an internal or external communication plan
  • Understanding and developing materials and tools for internal and external communication
  • To know and master the techniques of cultural mediation
  • Learn the basics of digital tools specific to communication professions: Desktop Publishing (DTP), video and radio editing, web writing
  • Understanding the different stages (theories, methods, fieldwork, analysis, writing) of a research approach in Information and Communication Sciences (ICS)
  • Knowing how to step back from professional situations and developing critical thinking skills.

Training opportunities:

The Information-Communication degree program meets the strategic priorities defined by the University of Reunion for its 2026-2030 training program.

The areas concerned are in particular:

  • Axis 1: Building a revised training offer adapted to the needs of the region

The Information and Communication degree program is fully integrated into the local area and also incorporates a broader perspective, open to the Indian Ocean region. The teaching team offers a multidisciplinary curriculum enabling students to acquire professional skills in the emerging fields of information, communication, and cultural and/or scientific mediation. The program also benefits from regular meetings and seminars between students, professionals in journalism, communication, and cultural mediation, and faculty researchers. Inviting professionals from these sectors to the university aims to foster connections with the professional world and ensures the program remains closely aligned with local issues.

The program also offers third-year undergraduate (L3) and Master's students an immersion in journalism in Madagascar. This immersion is part of a supervised project, designed as an experience guided by a journalism professional and a professor-researcher from the information and communication department.

  •  Axis 2:  ato improve student success mechanisms in the first year of undergraduate studies.

Student success in the first year (L1) is one of our priorities. To this end, the program offers two individualized pathways in L1, allowing students to benefit from supplementary modules in university study methods and language skills (Individualized Pathway 2).

The Information and Communication degree program also offers first-year tutoring sessions dedicated to individual or small-group support for students on various topics. Students with disabilities are supported by the Equality Office and benefit from accommodations for coursework and assessments (note-taking assistance, special arrangements, extra time, and separate rooms for exams).

Furthermore, it is about strengthening the professionalization of career paths linked to the economic, ecological, digital and societal transitions of the territory.

In accordance with national requirements (MESRI), courses on Ecological Transition for Sustainable Development (TEDS) are offered in the first year of undergraduate studies (L1). By combining ecological and media issues, these courses aim to train students in responsible and sustainable communication, while developing transferable skills that link digital culture and ecology. Furthermore, courses in information and documentation, particularly on artificial intelligence, also contribute to the professionalization of the program by equipping students to meet the challenges of major economic, ecological, digital, and societal transitions. By training them in the critical use of digital resources and artificial intelligence in document management, these courses prepare them to meet the growing needs of local stakeholders in terms of responsible communication, knowledge sharing, and the sustainable use of information resources.

Advantages of the training

The complementarity of the Information and Communication Sciences modules (multidisciplinary) and the Professional Teaching Units constitutes the particularity of the program. It aims for maximum integration of students into the information and communication sector, thanks in particular to a critical approach (in the sense of the Humanities and Social Sciences) which allows them to analyze and orient themselves within a professional sphere undergoing profound change, due to digital and ecological transformations (integration of social networks and Artificial Intelligence into their professional practices and consideration of the issues related to sustainable development).

Furthermore, the Information and Communication degree is fully integrated into the local area. The inclusion of professionals within the teaching team and regular meetings/seminars between students, professionals in journalism, communication, cultural mediation, and research professors ensure that the program remains closely aligned with local issues and facilitates the professional integration of young people who, from the start of their studies, are connected to a network of professionals.

Course Description

The Teaching Units (UE) of the Information and Communication Sciences (SIC) training are structured around four major theoretical and methodological orientations: the history, sociology, semiology and anthropology of the media.

  • Media history allows us to analyze the evolution of media devices, forms of discourse and social uses of information, by articulating technical, political and cultural contexts.
  • The sociology of media explores the logics of production, dissemination and reception of media messages, by mobilizing field surveys, case studies and the analysis of professional practices (journalism, institutional communication, cultural industries).
  • Semiology trains students in the analysis of signs, images and media discourse, giving them tools to decipher communication strategies, media narratives or digital devices.
  • Media anthropology engages in critical reflection on the cultural uses of information and communication practices, placing them in diverse social and symbolic contexts.

The teaching methods emphasize the integration of theoretical instruction, corpus analysis (texts, images, videos, digital devices), fieldwork, and supervised projects. This program aims to develop students' analytical, critical, and professional skills in relation to contemporary transformations in media, information technologies, and cultural practices.
