The Applied Foreign Languages ​​(LEA) English-Chinese Bachelor's degree is a multidisciplinary, trilingual program offering a professional track that combines modern languages, translation studies, civilization and economics, law, marketing, communication, international business, and geopolitics. It trains graduates to work in international contexts, particularly those related to Asia and English-speaking countries in the Indian Ocean and beyond.

Educational objectives and training opportunities

Educational goals :  

The Bachelor's degree aims to provide students with a high level of proficiency in English (C1) and an advanced level in Chinese (equivalent to B2). Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi level 4 - HSK4), as well as a third language. It also develops transferable skills in business, translation, interpreting, and written and oral communication. Emphasis is placed on professional development (two internships, mock interviews, employment contracts, intercultural exchanges), international exposure, and adaptability to the job market.

The English-Chinese Applied Foreign Languages ​​(LEA) degree, opened in 2020 at the University of Reunion Island, responds to a dual opportunity: on the one hand, it fits within the institutional priorities defined by the framework of the New Training Offer (NOF): multidisciplinarity, territorial anchoring, openness to the international community; and on the other hand, it responds to a growing demand from students, motivated by a strong cultural interest in the Sinophone world, reflecting the history of local settlement.

Chinese is now taught from secondary school onwards in the territory, thus strengthening the pool of learners to support in higher education. This program aims to produce trilingual graduates with professional skills in translation, intercultural communication, and international business. Its international focus is reinforced by strong academic and professional partnerships, particularly in China, Europe, and Asia. Furthermore, the island context and increasing exchanges with the Asia-Indian Ocean region fully justify such a training program, which serves local socio-economic development.

Advantages of the training

The English-Chinese Applied Foreign Languages ​​(LEA) degree is the only program of its kind in the Indian Ocean region. Its originality lies in the combination of rigorous language instruction, multidisciplinary training (economics, law, civilization), and a professional approach (specific teaching units, mandatory internships, T certification).est of English as a Foreign Language – TOEFL and HSK).

Students benefit from enhanced support (tutoring, regular office hours), a diverse teaching team (research professors, professionals, Chinese and English-speaking instructors), and strong institutional partnerships (Confucius Institute, Institute of Business Administration, partner universities in China, Europe, and Asia). Course Description

  • Bachelor's degree (L1)

The first year of the Bachelor's program introduces students to English and Chinese through grammar, phonetics, translation, culture, and professional expression. The teaching approach combines lectures, tutorials, and oral practice in a language lab to progressively develop communication skills. Instruction in law and economics complements this multidisciplinary program.

  • Bachelor's degree (L2)

In their second year, students deepen their mastery of modern languages ​​through the study of linguistics, specialized translation, and contemporary civilization, with a particular focus on English and specialized Chinese. Professional simulations and a functional approach to language enhance their autonomy and intercultural analytical skills. Courses in economics and law broaden their understanding of international issues.

  • Bachelor's degree (L3)

The third year (L3) focuses on professional development, strengthening language skills in a professional context (specialized translation, oral and written expression, intercultural communication). Courses aim for a B2/C1 level in English and a B2/HSK 4 level in Chinese, incorporating practical projects and a 280-hour internship. The interdisciplinary approach prepares students for further studies or entry into the business and communication sectors.

Depending on the student's situation, applications to enter the first year of Licence 1 (L1) take place according to two specific procedures (the national platform Parcoursup, Études en France).

Insertion rate

We only have limited statistics because the program is very recent (opened in 2020). The first feedback we have received regarding the 2023 cohort indicates a significant number of graduates pursuing Master's degrees (approximately 35%), continuing their studies in China (20%), completing well-integrated internships in target sectors, and entering the workforce (10%).
