Training summary

The Creole Licence is a multidisciplinary course, covering several fields of study and developing diverse skills with a focus on Creole areas (focusing on Indian Ocean linguistic and cultural issues), and the fundamentals (combination of disciplinary and transversal teaching).

This program develops students' critical thinking skills, their ability to observe, understand, and analyze Creole societies, particularly that of Réunion. It allows students to acquire a general knowledge base in Creole studies, Creole literature, and modern languages.

The third-year Bachelor's degree in Foreign and Regional Languages, Literatures, and Civilizations, specializing in Creole, aims to enhance all skills related to the field of Creole studies. It delves deeper into the areas of literature, linguistics, and sociolinguistics. It also offers opportunities in Information and Communication, History, and Anthropology. Emphasis is placed on the acquisition of methodological and technical skills in written and oral communication (in French and Creole) to ensure student success, particularly (but not exclusively) in teaching examinations. It provides excellent preparation for careers in teaching, culture, publishing, documentation, and communication. It also introduces students to research careers.

The Licence aims to certify people who can be employed in the implementation of actions undertaken following the Linguistic Pact signed between the State and local authorities (regional, departmental, municipal).

The Bachelor's degree provides the opportunity to implement tools from various disciplines while developing transferable skills. Professional integration is facilitated by the 100-hour internship. Student mobility is possible in other Creole-speaking areas.

Educational objectives and training opportunities

Educational goals : 

Disciplinary knowledge related to the fundamentals of creolistics: 

  • Several fields are involved: linguistics and grammar, Creole literature, writing methodology, the history of the Mascarene Islands and ethnology.
  • The training is enriched by courses in research initiation, podcast creation, and writing methodology.

Cross-cutting, linguistic and procedural skills:

  • Consolidation of proficiency in French and foreign languages.
  • Discovering or deepening oral and written skills in Réunion Creole.
  • Developing the ability to use digital tools to process, produce and disseminate information, as well as to collaborate with professional partners.
  • Consolidation of information processing capabilities (identifying, selecting and prioritizing various specialized resources) to problematize and address a subject.
  • Developing critical thinking skills and analytical abilities.
  • Developing soft skills: rigor, autonomy, intellectual curiosity, creativity, teamwork, independence, taking responsibility.

Pre-professional skills are also used. :

  • Developing skills in the creation and promotion of a professional project;
  • Preparation for the CAPES and Agrégation exams.

  • This research-based training program features presentations by specialists from various disciplines on the topics covered. Participation in scientific events is recognized during Creole Week.
  • Enhanced professional development: Connections with the professional world are fostered through the involvement of socio-economic and cultural stakeholders in several course units. A significant emphasis is placed on internships (100 hours). This is the only bachelor's degree program that prepares students for the CAPES and Agrégation competitive examinations in French language teaching.
  • A training program offering various further study options (Master MEEF, Master of Language Sciences) and professional integration in several sectors of activity (teaching, media, health and social services, culture, etc.).

Course Description

The course offering is structured into semesters and teaching units grouped into majors and minors. Training time is evenly distributed throughout the week, and course content is designed progressively across the different semesters.

In the first half of the year:

  •  History of the Mascarene Islands
  • Creole linguistics and grammar
  • Methodology of written Creole (shared with Social Sciences)
  • Creole Literatures
  • Ethnography of Creole spaces
  • Expression Techniques: Public Writer
  • Foreign language (LVE)
  • Digital culture
  • Pre-production visits and analysis of Creole-speaking professional spaces
  • Minor title: Creole and public space (shared course L3 information and communication)

In the second half of the year:

  • Linguistics and pragmatics (L3 Literature shared learning)
  • Creole Literatures
  • Introduction to Creole research
  • Translation and interpreting
  • Language planning of the territory (shared with L3 Social Sciences)
  • LVE
  • Internship
  • Opening Teaching Unit (UEO)
  • Minor title: Creole oral expression and podcasting

  • Having completed a minor in Creole or demonstrating a strong interest in the training
  • Have a Bac+2 level (BTS with Creole option).

Recommended qualifications for admission to the training program

Second year of a Bachelor's degree in the field of literature, languages ​​and humanities and social sciences or Validation of Acquired Experience (VAE).

Application procedures

Depending on the student's situation, applications to enter the first year of Bachelor's degree (L1) take place according to two specific procedures (the national platform Parcoursup, Études en France).
