Educational objectives and training opportunities

Educational objectives of the training:

At the end of their training, teachers or future teachers must be able to:
● analyze teaching/learning situations of French in varied sociolinguistic, cultural and cognitive contexts;
● define objectives in terms of skills to be acquired (in terms of communication, language and cognitive operations in particular) taking into account the objectives set by the institutions or the curriculum program in which they will be integrated;
● mastering the French system from the point of view of the foreign student (identifying systemic irregularities, ability to analyze and use learners' errors…);
● compare, adapt existing manuals and develop teaching sequences adapted to the target audiences;
● design assessments in written and oral reception and production;
● to open and manage collaborative online applications for educational purposes.

Training opportunities

The French as a Foreign Language (FLE) track within the LLCER Bachelor's degree provides initial training in language teaching methodology for those interested in teaching French and/or other languages, particularly in multilingual environments. It is also a prerequisite for any application to a Master's program focused on FLE.
This offer addresses significant training needs at the following levels:
● Local: Reunion Island is characterized by a pluralistic linguistic context, where French, Reunion Creole and other immigrant languages coexist. This sociolinguistic specificity has impacts in terms of inclusion and academic success for non-native French-speaking students, which requires special support and training adapted to this need;
● regional: The countries/territories surrounding Reunion Island (Madagascar, Mayotte, Comoros, etc.) are characterized by a situation of French as a second language, with major challenges in terms of mastery of French, often the only medium of instruction, and therefore of academic success;
● international: the offer is part of an international dynamic of promoting and disseminating French.

Course Description

The French as a Foreign Language (FLE) track within the LLCER Bachelor's degree offers general training in the didactics of French as a foreign and second language, enabling students to acquire the theoretical and practical foundations (which can then be further developed in a Master's program in FLE) necessary for teaching and analyzing learning. It comprises the following 15 course units (8 in the first semester, 7 in the second):

1 semester

  • English
    Development of oral and written communication skills in the target language, through a project based on a virtual trip to English-speaking countries.
  • Linguistic functions
    This course aims to (re)discover French grammar from the perspective of a non-native French speaker learning the language. It encourages critical analysis of rules found in textbooks and reference works.
  • Foundations of French as a Foreign Language Didactics
    Introduction to the foundations of language teaching / French as a Foreign Language (FLE), definition of what language teaching is and related concepts (communication and action skills, task-based approaches, etc.)
  • French as a Second Language

  • History of methodologies
    A study of the main currents of language methodologies since the 19th century: continuities, ruptures and invariants in these approaches.

2 semester

  • Language activities
    This course unit is a continuation of the course on the foundations of French as a Foreign Language (FLE) teaching methodology. Firmly focused on the development of professional skills, it will address language activities and strategies that help learners develop their skills in these activities.
  • Didactics of inter/plurculturality

Internships and supervised projects

A pre-professional training module is offered in the second semester. It includes a minimum 10-hour observation placement in an organization that works with school children, students, or adults (particularly those involved in literacy programs). This initial introduction to the professional world of teaching and training aims to:
● to familiarize students with real educational contexts, by allowing them to observe teaching practices and interactions between teachers/trainers and learners;
● develop a critical reflection on the approaches and tools of teaching and learning French, in connection with the theoretical contributions of the training;
● identify the specific needs of diverse audiences (schoolchildren, university students, adults in training, people in literacy situations);
● encourage the gradual development of a professional stance, by raising students' awareness of the requirements, responsibilities and ethical issues of the profession;
● to promote the link between academic knowledge and field practices, by introducing an initial experience of relating theory/practice.
This course unit thus constitutes a springboard towards the longer internships offered in terms of responsibility within the Master's program in French as a Foreign Language (FLE).
Students who already have extensive teaching and learning experience are exempt from the internship.
