Training summary

The STAPS Education and Motor Skills degree is a multidisciplinary course organized over three years according to a logic of progressive specialization with a view to the construction by the student of his professional project.

It consists of 6 semesters. The first two semesters of the first year (Semester 1 and Semester 2) constitute the common core curriculum. Semesters 3 through 6 are specific to the "Education and Motor Skills" specialization.

The main objective of this specialization is to train students who are preparing to teach physical, sporting and expressive activities in educational settings, within a school and/or associative framework.

This training aims to equip future facilitators with the knowledge and skills to design and conduct group learning sessions based on the practice of physical, sporting and expressive activities, and to evaluate their effects.

At the end of the second year, a professional card is issued. This qualification allows the holder to supervise and lead physical or sporting activities at an introductory, fitness, or recreational level, for all audiences (excluding specific disciplines such as swimming), but excluding competitive practices.

During the 3e In the year students can apply for the Certificate of Aptitude for Teaching Physical and Sports Education (CAPEPS) and/or the Recruitment Competition for Primary School Teachers (CRPE).

Educational objectives and training opportunities

Educational objectives:

  • To acquire and deepen scientific knowledge in the fields of life sciences, humanities and social sciences in connection with physical education and sport.
  • To acquire and deepen knowledge in the fields of intervention sciences, technology, and didactics of the main physical, sporting, and artistic activities (APSA) taught in school and extracurricular settings.
  • To design, regulate and practice in different physical, sporting and artistic activities belonging to the 5 learning fields (performance, natural environment, expression, opposition, self-development)
  • Acquire the professional tools to take responsibility for a group within an associative and educational environment
  • Develop knowledge and skills that meet the requirements of the various tests of the CAPEPS or the Competitive Examination for Recruitment of Primary School Teachers (CRPE)
  • Introduction to research and investigative methods.
  • Proficiency in digital tools and communication in a foreign language

Training opportunities

The training program fully aligns with the inclusive policy by enabling the majority of second-year undergraduate students to enter the job market by obtaining their professional card. However, from the third year onwards, it remains a professionally oriented and qualification-based track, preparing students for national competitive examinations (CAPEPS, CRPE, etc.).

Pedagogical proximity is a key focus of this course: the number of hours dedicated to lectures is reduced in order to increase the number of hours dedicated to tutorials, thus promoting time for interaction, exchange and knowledge assessment in small groups.

A second key focus is the construction of a balanced training program (alternating between theoretical input (TD) and practical Physical, Sporting or Artistic Activities (APSA) which is also intended to be progressive (temporal and increasing ordering of scientific knowledge) promoting the success of the greatest number.

The third key focus is the gradual immersion of students in community and/or academic settings through professional internships. These internships are linked to tutorials to ensure coherence and continuity in learning. Their purpose is to help students confirm their career choices.

In the second year of the bachelor's degree, this involves a continuous internship (academic year) in a sports association related to their chosen physical activity.

For the third year of the degree, it is a continuous internship over the school year where a pair of trainees takes charge of a primary or secondary school class during a fixed time slot.

Furthermore, in order to strengthen mastery of the French language, multiple-choice question assessment methods are eliminated and assessments are conducted exclusively in written and/or oral form with high requirements for the quality of written and oral expression.

Advantages of the training

The training is based on a multidisciplinary scientific approach which includes professional gestures related to intervention in the field of motor skills, from an educational perspective.

Course Description

The course comprises approximately 30 hours of classes per week. Instruction is delivered through lectures, tutorials, and practical sessions. A portion of the student work is also completed remotely (homework assignments).

L1 STAPS "common core":

The first year of the STAPS degree is a common foundation in the multidisciplinary field of Science and Techniques of Physical and Sports Activities, including:

  • Scientific subjects: humanities or life sciences such as physiology, biomechanics, anatomy, sociology, psychology, history of sport…
  • Methodological skills: proficiency in a foreign language, comfort with computers, good writing skills, and the ability to communicate orally.
  • Sports materials

It is also recommended to be involved in the life of a sports club or association, by being licensed within a Federation.

You will also need to demonstrate swimming skills in order to pass the aquatic rescue test, which is essential for obtaining certification.

Students who are able to be very versatile, showing availability in many sports, are those most likely to succeed in STAPS.

L1 STAPS LAS “Health Access”

Following the 2020 reform of the PACES "first year common to health studies", the STAPS department offers an "Access to Health" option linked to the first year of STAPS license which allows our students to apply by way of examination to the second year of health studies, MMOPK stream (Medicine, Midwifery, Dentistry, Pharmacy or Physiotherapy).

Students will have to take disciplinary Staps courses (physiology, biomechanics, anatomy, sociology, psychology, history of sport and certain physical and sporting activities) transversal courses (methodology, data processing, English…) and courses related to the health option.

L1 STAPS PA "Adapted pathway"

In accordance with the application of the ORE law of March 8, 2018, the STAPS department has implemented, after a thorough examination of the files during the pre-registration procedure (Parcoursup), an adapted pathway.

The aim of this adapted program is to:

  • To provide each student with methods to succeed in their studies in Humanities and Life Sciences.
  • To provide students entering L1 with the best possible reception conditions with small tutorial groups.
  • Strengthen their educational support with personalized follow-up.
  • To facilitate their gradual integration into higher education.
  • To ensure the acquisition of a foundation of know-how essential for success in the bachelor's degree.

L2 STAPS

A supervised practical placement (duration: 50 hours) is scheduled during the second year of undergraduate studies (L2) within the sports specialization module. A supervised placement (duration: 40 hours) is scheduled during the third year of undergraduate studies (L3) within the Educational Intervention module.

The different teaching units in the second year of undergraduate studies are divided into four main areas:

  • Disciplinary unit: Socio-history and Epistemology of Physical Education / Teaching Physical Education
  • The EU sports specialization: Design and implementation of teaching sequences – internship
  • UE Practical and technological aspects of physical and sporting activities
  • Cross-disciplinary course: Digital tools, introduction to research, English, ECU

L3 STAPS

In the third year of undergraduate studies (L3), which focuses on teaching exams, the teaching units are divided into four main areas.

  • EU history of physical education and the education system
  • Physical Education Teaching Unit (thematic approaches to major professional issues)
  • EU educational intervention relating to the professional dimensions of intervention in the educational environment
  • UE Teaching of Physical and Sports Activities
  • Cross-disciplinary course: Introduction to research, English, ECU
