Training summary
The Master's program aims to provide its students with training based on three pillars: economic analysis, tools (quantitative techniques, software, methodologies) used in economic analysis, data analysis and impact assessments, and finally professional development.
The program includes core courses and two tracks: Sustainable Development and Spatial Planning (DDAT) and Quantitative Methods and Modeling for Business (MQME). Depending on their choice of track and internships, students will specialize in one of the four areas offered by the Master's program and will be able to apply for management-level positions in various sectors of the economy upon completion of the program.
Educational objectives and training opportunities
Educational goals :
The aim of the training is to enable students to develop 4 key transferable skills allowing them to be employable in many sectors of activity:
- Mastering the data chain. Upon completion of the master's program, students will have learned to use various tools enabling them, in many contexts, to collect, process and analyze data in order to produce results that will serve as decision support.
- The measurement of the economic, social and environmental impacts of public or private activities and projects, through the use of various tools (quantitative surveys, cost-benefit analyses, etc.).
- Project management is useful for students aiming for generalist positions in the field of territorial development.
- Training in and through research, which helps to develop adaptability skills in all students.
Training opportunities:
The training is fully in line with the strategic priorities of the institution, particularly with regard to action 1 (building a training offer adapted to the needs of the territory), action 4 (strengthening the professionalization of pathways linked to the economic, ecological, digital and societal transitions of the territory) and action 7 (rethinking doctoral training).
The program maintains close ties with the socio-professional environment, particularly through its alumni network. The program's LinkedIn group, with over 120 members, helps maintain and develop connections between the Master's program and professional circles, especially in Réunion. Furthermore, for many years, the recruitment of a part-time teaching assistant has also facilitated the development of close relationships between the program and the local community.
The international focus of the program is evident in several ways, including: maintaining 60 hours of English tutorials across the two-year program; offering students the opportunity to complete an internship, a semester, or a year of study abroad through one of the programs offered by the International Relations Department (DRI); welcoming international students, some of whom are recipients of merit-based scholarships (Horizon, Eiffel, etc.); and establishing partnerships with foreign universities (Catholic University of Madagascar, University of Louvain-la-Neuve, and University of Mons) to promote incoming and outgoing mobility for both faculty and students. It is also worth noting that some faculty members have completed EMIRALD training and are beginning to teach (part of) their courses in English.
Advantages of the training
The Master's in Applied Economics is a program designed to equip students with a range of transferable skills, enabling them to find employment in numerous sectors upon graduation (public and private sectors, associations, unions, etc.). Given the limited size of the local job market, this is a significant advantage for students seeking employment in Réunion.
The second advantage of the master's degree is that it opens the door to several clearly identified career paths that correspond to labor market needs. Depending on their chosen specialization and the focus of their internships, students can pursue four areas of specialization:
- data-related professions,
- certain jobs in sustainable development,
- the professions of economic analysis and public policy evaluation,
- the professions of economic development and land-use planning (see details) infra). Certain job profiles accessible to our post-master's graduates are experiencing increasing demand in the job market (e.g.: data analyst, project manager in sustainable development), ensuring them rapid professional integration.
From a pedagogical standpoint, the program strives to combine the theories, tools, and methodologies taught with practical application. Professional simulations are well-developed and are achieved through supervised projects and extended internships (students have the opportunity to complete 11 months of internships within the 24-month program). These teaching methods contribute to enhancing the employability of our graduates.
The Master's program offers its students the opportunity to spend a semester or a whole year abroad by taking advantage of the programs set up by the university's international relations department.
Finally, it is the only Master's degree in economics that opens the way to doctoral studies in the territory.

Course Description
The Master's program is organized around a common core curriculum comprising three types of teaching:
- Economic analysis, particularly through the study of economic policies and development issues
- The tools (quantitative techniques, software, economic methodologies) used for economic analysis, data analysis and impact assessments (economic, social, societal and environmental)
- Teaching units dedicated to professional development and internationalization (e.g., job search techniques, English, project management, etc.)
At both the first and second year of the Master's program (M1 and M2), students have the option of completing an internship or a research thesis. Internships culminate in the production of a written document (a professional analysis and observation report, or NAOP, in M1 and a professional thesis in M2). The written documents submitted by students as part of their internship or research thesis are defended orally before a jury. Internships have a maximum duration of 5 months at the M1 level and 6 months at the M2 level.
In addition to core curriculum courses, the training also includes two tracks: Sustainable Development and Land Use Planning (DDAT) and Quantitative Methods and Modeling for Business (MQME).
The DDAT program primarily trains public sector managers for positions related to territorial (sustainable) development issues, and more generally, the management of public projects. It also allows students to deepen their knowledge of environmental impact assessment tools and methodologies.
Students choosing the MQME track will be offered advanced courses in quantitative techniques, evaluation tools, and software for data collection, processing, and analysis. This track will be preferred by students wishing to pursue doctoral studies.
