Training summary

The Master's in Computer Science is an engineering-level program. It aims to meet the socio-professional needs of the region, the Indian Ocean area, and beyond by training future technical managers capable of leading and implementing innovative IT projects. The Master's program's ambition is to train highly skilled computer scientists with advanced expertise in data science and computer engineering, with a particular focus on mobile applications, the web, and artificial intelligence.

Educational objectives and training opportunities

Educational goals :

The primary objective of the Master's program in Computer Science at the University of Reunion Island is to train technical professionals for the IT sector. This program is delivered in collaboration with industry and research institutions. The professional component of the program remains closely aligned with technological aspects, resulting in an excellent job placement rate. The research component focuses primarily on decision support and data science, which are the research themes of the Laboratory of Computer Science and Mathematics (LIM), the research unit that supports the program. Students can pursue doctoral studies, particularly at the LIM. The curriculum covers mobile technologies, web applications, Big Data, and artificial intelligence.

The Master's program in Computer Science also aims to develop students' adaptability by introducing them to research and exposing them to the latest developments in computer science. This skill is essential for keeping pace with the constant and rapid evolution of the IT sector. A graduate of this program is therefore well-equipped to adapt throughout their professional career thanks to a solid foundation of enduring theoretical knowledge and strong skills delivered by a team of professors and researchers.

In summary, this Master's program is an advanced training course designed to help students realize a high-quality professional project in the digital economy. Passionate students, ready to dedicate their talents to the digital transition, are encouraged to apply.

Training opportunities:

Within the University of Reunion Island, the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) offers diverse training programs closely linked to the latest developments in science and technology, and also to the strategic development sectors of the Reunion Island region. Digital technology (and therefore computer science) is identified as one of the six strategic sectors of the Reunion Island region (Source: Regional Economic Development and Innovation Plan – SRDEII 2023).

The Master's program in Computer Science contributes to the training of highly qualified personnel to supply this strategic sector of regional policy. The program aims to train business executives and generalist IT professionals with advanced skills in data science (with applications in artificial intelligence) and computer engineering, with a particular focus on mobile and web applications. The training of technical managers in the IT sector meets national and regional socio-professional demands as expressed in the framework of the Workforce Planning and Skills Management (GPEC) plan for the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) sector in Réunion.

In its strategic priorities, as outlined in the framework document for the New Training Program (NOF 2026), the institution aims to develop training programs that promote the success of its students and are tailored to its local area. These priorities are implemented through several actions. In particular, the Master's program in Computer Science is fully aligned with Action 4, which focuses on strengthening professional skills related to the digital transition. The program is offered either through traditional full-time study or through a work-study program. It thus provides two pathways adapted to both the local area and the students' individual career goals. The Master's program offers career opportunities in digital innovation. The work-study option also contributes to increasing the technical expertise of local businesses while reinforcing the professional nature of the training itself.

It is worth noting that in Réunion, the territory has seen the opening of numerous private training organizations in the field of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in recent years to meet the estimated demand of nearly 300 engineering positions per year. Faced with this strong competition from local private training programs, the Master's program in Computer Science distinguishes itself through the quality of its training and its high level of qualification, delivered by staff recognized experts in their field.

Advantages of the training

The Master's program in Computer Science is a unique public program of its kind in Réunion and in the French Indian Ocean. The program is taught by a faculty comprised primarily of research professors who are active and recognized experts in their fields. Students thus benefit from cutting-edge ICT training and gain initial exposure to innovation and research.

In order to best adapt to each student's professional project, the Master's in Computer Science offers 2 courses:

  • The Computer Engineering course in initial training prepares students for both professional integration and further studies in a doctorate.
  • The work-study Computer Engineering course aims to accelerate professional integration by offering the opportunity to work in a company alongside your studies.

The Master of Computer Science at the University of Reunion is also:

  • the availability of all teaching resources on an online learning platform
  • A high-quality working environment. The training program benefits from a dedicated classroom equipped with a projector and an interactive whiteboard. Students have access to a study room. A lounge is also available between classes.
  • Innovative teaching methods, the curriculum is organized into seminars led by both academic and professional experts, collaborative workshops and applied research projects, promoting an immersive learning experience.
  • A solid network of partner companies for internships, projects and recruitment in Reunion.
  • Target success rates of 85% in the first year and 90% in the second year.
  • Graduates successfully integrate into the local economy. The majority of students find employment during their final internship. Graduates have no difficulty being recruited locally.

Course Description

The first year of the Master's program (M1) focuses on specialization in computer science, particularly web and mobile software development, cybersecurity, and the fundamentals of artificial intelligence and machine learning. It includes forward-looking courses to provide insights into the digital future. Projects, also known as Research Projects (TER), are scheduled each semester to apply the acquired knowledge. The second-semester project can be completed as an internship in a company.

The second year of the Master's program (M2) offers an introduction to both the business world and the research world. This professionalizing year aims to deepen the knowledge acquired in the first year, which is geared towards the socio-professional world, through courses on secure and responsible web infrastructures, business work methods, innovation, and entrepreneurship. The computer science research topics follow those of the program's affiliated laboratory (LIM), which focus on artificial intelligence and decision support. A crucial aspect that should never be overlooked in software development is its validation. The Master's program includes training to master software validation. The year concludes with the practical application of acquired knowledge and skills through an experience in a professional setting or in a research laboratory.
