Training summary

The LLCER Master's program, specializing in the English-speaking world, is a generalist program offered exclusively as initial training, designed to align with the institution's strategy and building upon the LLCER Bachelor's degree. It provides training in the language, linguistics, literature, and civilization of the English- and Spanish-speaking worlds. With specializations that enhance its local appeal, the program also benefits from strong research connections led by a dedicated teaching team and prepares students for professional careers in various fields.

This program is part of a broader professionalization approach, offering career opportunities in cultural mediation, publishing, heritage management, and cultural tourism, as well as effectively supporting preparation for secondary school teaching exams. It strengthens the university appeal of Réunion, in line with the island's ambitions for cultural and scientific influence.

Educational objectives and training opportunities

Educational goals :

Training opportunities:

The Master's program in English Language, Literature, and Civilization (LLCER) allows students from Réunion to continue their English studies after their Bachelor's degree in Réunion. Students benefit from Réunion's unique geostrategic position, which facilitates exchanges with the Creole-speaking, French-speaking, and English-speaking worlds of the Africa-Asia region.

Advantages of the training

In addition to the fundamental disciplinary courses in civilization, literature, linguistics and translation, the Master's program in Foreign Languages, Literatures and Civilizations (LLCER) with a specialization in the English-speaking world is distinguished by... a consolidation of the study of societies and cultures of the Indian Ocean, particularly those of South Africa, India, and Sri Lanka, which are integrated into a broader program within the field of "Postcolonial Studies." This orientation gives the program a distinctive identity adapted to its regional context. The consolidation of teaching in “Women’s and Gender Studies and/or Minority Studies” offers students the opportunity to perfect their mastery of theoretical and methodological tools related to the study of social relations and issues of discrimination linked to gender, sexuality, ethnicity, and disability.

The progressive support of student projects, and the close links with socio-professional actors in the territory finally allow for effective integration into professions such as cultural mediation, teaching or, for example, translation, while promoting cooperation in the Creole-speaking, French-speaking and English-speaking areas.

Course Description

In the first year of the Master's program, specializing in the English-speaking world, students take a Research Methodology course, also offered in the second year (M2), which introduces them to academic research. Two Literature courses allow students to work on American and British literary works. The courses "Literature of the English-speaking World" and "Civilization of the English-speaking World" focus on the culture of the Indian Ocean region: the first offers a seminar on contemporary South African literature, while the second explores the colonial history of Sri Lanka, an English-speaking country in the Indian Ocean, through cultural texts.

The EU “Postcolonial Studies” provides students with the theoretical tools to analyze literary texts and to identify the issues specific to the study of postcolonial literatures.

Students also take a module in Linguistics and "Specialized Professional Translation", as well as a module in a Modern Foreign Language.

The EU “Women’s and Gender Studies and/or Minority Studies” offers them theoretical and methodological tools to understand and analyze social relations and issues of discrimination related to gender, sexuality, ethnicity, and disability.

Students submit a 30-page research project (TER) at the end of their first year and are also introduced to the world of research through the "Participation in Scientific Events" course, a continuation of the "Introduction to Research" course in the third year of their Bachelor's degree. They attend conferences, thesis defenses, and research seminars and write a report on these events.

In Master 2, students take the Specialized Professional Translation and/or Literary Translation course, as well as a Linguistics course in semester 1.

Seminars in British and American Civilization and Literature are offered in the first semester of the second year of the Master's program (M2). During their second semester, students take a single course unit: Literature and/or Civilization of the Anglophone World. The remainder of the semester is dedicated to their internship (140 hours) and the writing of their research thesis.

Students have at their disposal a range of Minor UEs, including a "cultural mediation" track in Master 1 (M1) and in M2.
