Training summary

This Master LLCER Hispanic world offers to strengthen and deepen the knowledge acquired during the Bachelor of Hispanic studies, particularly in literature, arts, language, translation, history and Spanish and Hispano-American cultures with a resolutely intercultural dimension.

Its aim is to train students in academic writing and critical thinking, with a view to writing a Master's thesis and preparing for various civil service examinations. Furthermore, the program incorporates critical reflection on contemporary issues related to the environment (ecological transition), new technologies, particularly artificial intelligence, and their impact on the humanities, cultural practices, and methods of knowledge dissemination.

Finally, this training is part of a broader professionalization approach, offering opportunities in the fields of cultural mediation, heritage management, cultural tourism, as well as effectively supporting preparation for secondary school teaching competitions.

Educational objectives and training opportunities

Educational goals :

This Master's program aims to develop an interdisciplinary perspective in research in foreign languages and the humanities, fostering the cross-cutting analysis of issues related to mixed-race societies and interculturality. It trains students to master new digital tools, including artificial intelligence, for the study of cultural phenomena. The program also prepares students for the production of academic work (internship report, thesis) and its oral defense before a jury.

Training opportunities:

Links are being forged with local institutions: museums, cultural institutes and associations, in particular through the participation of professionals in the cultural and heritage sectors in our "Arts and Cultures" EU, with the aim of promoting professional integration for our students.

We have established links with certain Spanish universities (University of Caceres, for example) and with Florida International University (with which we have been working for five years) with the aim of offering our students the opportunity to undertake a remote internship as tutors of Spanish and/or French as a foreign language.

Advantages of the training

This Master's program in Hispanic Studies is distinguished by its interdisciplinary approach, which connects the fields of literature, translation, the arts, heritage, and cultural history within Hispanic and Latin American contexts. It places particular emphasis on identity dynamics, interculturality, and the challenges faced by mixed-race societies, thus providing a framework for critical analysis grounded in contemporary issues.

One of the program's strengths lies in its openness to new research tools: the introduction to digital humanities and artificial intelligence allows students to approach cultural objects using innovative methods. This technological dimension represents a real asset for professional and academic integration.

The master's program also emphasizes professional development through the writing of internship reports, the development of a research thesis, and participation in scientific events. Regular presentations by professionals (in the fields of culture, translation, and heritage) complement the curriculum, preparing students for a variety of career opportunities.

Finally, its regional openness towards the Indian Ocean and the Hispanic world makes it a unique institution, both locally rooted and internationally open.

Course Description

Teaching Unit (UE) Methodology Methodology and Text Analysis in Semester 1 (S1) and Research Methodology in Semester 3 (S3). These modules are designed to help students develop their research thesis by addressing topics such as defining the topic, conducting documentary research (primary/secondary sources), organizing their thoughts for thesis writing, the principles and formal rules of thesis writing, and providing individual support during the initial stages of the thesis writing process. These modules aim to develop the following skills: mastering theoretical concepts, research methods and techniques, compiling a coherent corpus on a given topic, developing analytical thinking skills, speaking effectively in public about one's research, identifying different types of documents (academic, media, internet, etc.), and using reliable sources.

EU Foreign Language English research-oriented in S1

EU Practical Translation: These courses, offered in semesters 1, 2, and 3, aim to develop advanced translation skills in students of the Master's program in Hispanic Studies. They will work with a variety of texts from literary, journalistic, scientific, and institutional fields. The goal is to strengthen students' ability to understand, analyze, and reformulate texts while respecting the linguistic and cultural specificities of Spanish and French.

EU Arts and Cultures In semesters 1 and 2, these courses will be led by one or more professionals. Their aim is to familiarize students with the major cultural and artistic dynamics of the Hispanic world, while introducing them to critical thinking about the concepts of heritage, memory, and identity. Through a multidisciplinary approach (art history, anthropology, cultural studies, museology), the course will examine how Hispanic societies construct, preserve, value, and reinterpret their heritage throughout different periods.

EU Literatures, Perspectives and Identities Taught in semesters 1 and 2, these courses explore the relationship between Hispanic literary production and identity construction (individual, collective, cultural, and political). They examine how literatures of the Hispanic world—whether canonical, marginal, popular, or experimental—contribute to the narrative of self, others, and the world through diverse lenses: gender, memory, race, nation, sexuality, migration, and post/coloniality. The course fosters a comparative and interdisciplinary approach, integrating both contemporary literature and classic works.

EU TER: in semester 2

At the end of the semester, each student submits a progress report on their research to their supervisor to validate the course unit. The work must meet the standards and level of expectation for a Master's level, which will have been reviewed during the methodology course unit and by the supervisor. This progress report is submitted in writing and may be accompanied by an oral presentation (the details of which should be discussed with each supervisor). The oral presentation will be considered for the final assessment of this course unit, but it is not a separate grade.

EU Scientific Events : in semester 2

Each M1 student is required to attend (physically or virtually) scientific events (colloquia, conferences, research/study days, seminars), thesis or HDR defenses, but also 'public' scientific conferences, preferably in connection with the Spanish-speaking world and with the research laboratories of the FLSH of the University of Reunion (DIRE, LCF, OIES).

EU History, Heritage, Environments In semesters 2 and 3, these courses explore the complex relationships between the historical dynamics of the Hispanic world, heritage construction, and environmental transformations. The aim is to consider heritage not only as the memory of people, but also as the memory of places, landscapes, and resources, in connection with political, economic, and ecological upheavals. This course draws on interdisciplinary approaches from cultural history, environmental history, geography, and anthropology.

EU News from the Hispanic World In semester 3, this course unit offers a critical and analytical approach to current events in the Hispanic world, focusing on political, economic, social, cultural, and environmental issues. It relies on continuous monitoring and utilizes a variety of media (press articles, podcasts, broadcasts, opinion pieces, social media, artistic productions) to foster a comprehensive understanding of contemporary challenges facing the Hispanic world and the tensions within it. The course develops skills in nuanced understanding of current events, discourse analysis, and reasoned argumentation.

EU Digital Humanities and AI In semester 3, this course offers a critical and practical introduction to the tools, methods, and challenges of digital humanities and artificial intelligence (AI) in the field of Hispanic studies. This course supports professional development, stimulates creativity, and cultivates digital skills applied to the languages, cultures, literature, history, and heritage of the Hispanic world.

EU Music and Audiovisual Arts In semester 4 (with presentations by one or more professionals), this course focuses on certain manifestations of 20th-century Latin American music. Our objective is to consider popular music within the framework of postcolonial and cultural studies.

EU Memory:A research thesis involves producing an in-depth study of a specific topic, following the rules and methods of scientific work. The study developed in the thesis must be based on an analysis of precise empirical data (a corpus). In other words, a thesis is not about essay writing, that is, formulating one's own opinions without supporting them with methodically collected and analyzed facts.

EU Professional Communication:This course aims to strengthen students' ability to communicate effectively in professional contexts, both orally and in writing, from an intercultural and multilingual perspective focused on the Hispanic world. It offers methodological and practical tools for mastering communication codes and formats in the fields of culture, research, international cooperation, translation, media, and project management. It also supports preparation for professional integration (CV writing, cover letters, project presentations, interviews, etc.) and enables students to become proficient in the digital tools and registers they will use in their future professional lives.
