Training summary

The Master's in Sports Management is a two-year degree program following a Bachelor's degree. Admission to the first year (M1) requires completion of a Bachelor's degree (Bac +3) relevant to the Master's program's field of study. The Master's degree is awarded upon successful completion of 120 ECTS credits spread over four semesters (two years).

The Master's program in Sports Management at the Training and Research Unit (UFR) of Human and Environmental Sciences (SHE) is divided into two tracks:

  • Management of the physical and mental well-being of individuals and organizations
  • Events and territorial sustainability: trail running, raids, orienteering, combined running activities, etc.

The course therefore offers, over 4 semesters, a common core of 150 hours and two specialized tracks of 350 hours each.

The training is based on the framework of the National Directory of Professional Certifications (RNCP) of the Conference of Directors in STAPS (C3D) STAPS..

It brings knowledge, know-how and skills in the fields of sports management and (1) the management of the physical and mental well-being of individuals and organizations, or (2) sports events of "off-track" races and the sustainability of territories.

Both courses are open to the following study programs:

Neither course offers 100% distance learning and both generally take place on the Tampon campus of the University of Reunion Island.

Educational objectives and training opportunities

Educational goals :

In September 2020, the Department of Science and Techniques of Physical and Sports Activities (STAPS), within the Faculty of Humanities and Environment, launched a specialization in the Management of Physical and Mental Well-being of Individuals and Organizations as part of its Master's program in Management. This specialization aims to train professionals from the fields of sports, health, education, and work to improve individual and collective well-being. The objective is to develop skills in managing and organizing physical well-being through expertise in physical and bodily activities, and mental well-being through expertise in positive psychology. These professionals will be able to implement programs for individuals or organizations that will improve their individual and collective well-being, thereby contributing to improved performance in their respective fields (sports, health, education, or work).

The master's program aims to train future specialists in well-being within the fields of sport, health, education, and work. It will also contribute to strengthening the skills of professionals such as coaches, nurses, healthcare managers, teachers, and training managers in the area of ​​individual and collective well-being.

Course Description

Master 1 (M1) semester 1:

  • English: This unit aims to improve English language skills in the context of well-being. It includes oral practice as well as the analysis and comprehension of scientific documents useful for writing a dissertation.
  • Developing a professional internship project: The Teaching Unit (UE) is composed of 2 parts. The first part covers the first 2 weeks of classes. The objective here is to get to know you using the method building one's life (life designing)) stemming, among other things, from theories in positive psychology. The second part, covering the remainder of the semester, is a presentation of various professions related to the master's program.
  • Well-being and Self-Fatigue: This teaching unit offers an overview of models related to well-being and self-fatigue in our contemporary societies. Two models will be particularly addressed. The first is psychophysiological and integrates psychological and cognitive functions into the processes of fatigue. The second is sociohistorical and draws on a new psychic economy where well-being and fatigue are now linked to self-construction and personal subjectivity.
  • Developing a digital development strategy: The objective of this module is to teach you how to use certain digital tools, primarily video, to present your future business. This will involve presenting yourself through the biography you wrote in Module 1.
  • Developing your research project: This course unit introduces you to research and, above all, scientific thinking through methodology and guidance that will help you develop a research question to guide your research and your Master 2 (M2) internship. This question can certainly evolve, but establishing a guiding principle as early as possible is important.
  • Basic Theory in Positive Psychology: This course aims to familiarize you with some theories from positive psychology, particularly definitions of well-being, theories of emotions and their impact on daily life, and theories of motivation, flow…
  • Basic Principles of Intervention: This course aims to introduce you to the basic principles of intervention in positive psychology. It is divided into two parts. The first part focuses on intervention in organizations (businesses, sports institutions, schools, etc.). The second part focuses on intervention with individuals.

Master 1 (M1) semester 2:

  • English: As a continuation of the first semester's EU, this unit aims to strengthen students' English skills in well-being and research.
  • Developing your internship project: The objective of this module is to design your professional project using the Life Designing method. This step will allow you to work on the intrinsic factors of development and success of your professional project.
  • Developing your research project: The aim of this course is to develop your research question through the scientific literature. You will therefore need to expand your knowledge as much as possible in the field or issue that interests you. Of course, this must also be linked to your career goals.
  • Developing well-being through the social and physical environment: The environment is an essential element of well-being. The objective of this course is to present and develop skills to improve the social and physical environment in order to develop well-being through positive environmental psychology and physical ergonomics.
  • Training in Well-being/Positive Psychology Intervention: The aim of this course is to introduce you to some essential elements of intervention. More specifically, we will address aspects related to improving physical well-being and tools for improving mental well-being such as heart coherence, mindfulness, and mental imagery.
  • Areas of intervention in well-being/positive psychology: The objective of this course unit is to present how it is possible to intervene in different areas such as physical exercise, health, education, and work.

Master 2 (M2) Semester 1:

  • Developing your professional project: The objective of this course is to reflect on the products and services you could offer in connection with the project developed in the first year of your Master's program. These products and services will be showcased on a website.
  • Developing your professional project: The objective of this module is to work on the methodology aspect of your research (statistics, measurement, etc.)
  • Developing an intervention program: the objective of this course is to introduce you to what a program in positive psychology is. You will also experience the entire CARE program. This course unit is linked to the last three courses on individual and collective resources, mental well-being, and physical well-being.
  • Optimizing and managing individual and collective resources: This course aims to help you better understand individual and collective resources. From a more collective perspective, we will present how to resolve team problems, particularly through the use of Nonviolent Communication (NVC).
  • Optimizing mental well-being: This course aims to study the process of emotional regulation during physical exercise, a key factor in well-being. Models of exercise-induced fatigue will be addressed using a holistic approach.

M2 Semester 2:

  • Research Dissertation: This course unit supports students in writing their research dissertation. It allows students to continue to be supervised by a research tutor who will guide them through the various stages of finalizing the dissertation (formatting results, analysis, etc.). At the end of this course unit, students must submit a dissertation, which they will present in an oral defense.
  • Internship report: This teaching unit contributes to the regular monitoring of the student during their internship long It allows the student to be supported through the various professional situations they encounter during this experience and to be guided in writing their final-year internship report. It also facilitates communication between the host organization and the University. At the end of the internship, the report is evaluated according to specific criteria. A professional oral presentation is also required.

Internships and supervised projects

An internship  The internship takes place during the second year of the Master's program. It lasts a minimum of 280 hours and can be completed on Réunion Island or abroad, with international mobility being recommended. The internship is organized in conjunction with the research and professional project. The commitment is significant and prepares students for professional life afterward. This internship is assessed through a professional report and an oral presentation related to the research and the report. It therefore requires highly specialized knowledge.

Supervised projects

As part of the EU program, students develop an intervention program. They are tasked with creating and leading a program within an organization. In parallel, other small projects related to workplace well-being or the environment are developed in other EU modules.

The recommended degree for admission to this program is a Bachelor's degree (L3) in STAPS (Sciences and Techniques of Physical and Sports Activities). Other Bachelor's degrees (Bac +3) related to well-being or fields of application such as education and health are also accepted (for example, L3 in Psychology, L3 in Health Sciences, or L3 in Education Sciences).
