Educational objectives and training opportunities
Educational goals :
The Master's program in Sports Management, specializing in Events and Territorial Sustainability: trail running, adventure racing, orienteering, combined running activities, etc., aims to train future managers in the sports events sector, particularly for racing events. off-stadium trail running, raid, orienteering, marathon and other combined running activities.
From this perspective, the training takes into account contemporary developments in event management and these racing practices. off-stadium , whether combined or not. It also relies on innovation and sustainability (economic, social, environmental), which today contribute to the development model of this sector and its attractiveness for private, associative and public actors.
The program equips students with the skills to create, develop, and organize sporting events that are integrated with the specific characteristics of local areas and their ecosystems, as well as in-depth knowledge of innovation and sustainability. Graduates will be able to work as sports event project managers, sustainability officers in sports organizations, or sports event management consultants, among other roles.
The training also allows students to create or strengthen their professional networks through simulations (business creation challenges, public or private order scenarios, job dating, etc.), and through internships in European running event organizations, or in the Indian Ocean area (South Africa, Madagascar, Mauritius, Rodrigues, Mayotte, Sri Lanka, South Africa, etc.).
Training opportunity :
The opening of a second course on Events and Territorial Sustainability: trail running, raids, Orienteering (OC), combined running activities, etc. Within the Master's program in Sports Management at the UFR SHE, is first and foremost part of an international, national and local context that is favorable to running and "off-track" running activities.
- Growth in "off-track" racing activities
In 2016, the value of Major International Sporting Events (MISE) was estimated at around 50 billion euros per year worldwide. (National Centre for the Development of Sport, Mapping of sports event value chains, Final Report, August 2016)
At the European and national level, sporting events of races off-stadium has been identified as a rapidly growing sector. In its 2019 SportEco bulletin, the Ministry of Sports emphasizes that this sector is key to the development of the sports industry in France. (SportEco, Race Organization Strategies) off-stadium Analysis Note No. 17, May 14, 2019)
Thus in France, in 2018, 11,000 races off-stadium have been organised, this sector being valued at 1,2 billion euros in 2024 and representing 12,4 million participants in 2025, of which more than 8 million run at least once a week (source:[1] Sport Eco, The organisation strategies of off-track races. Analysis Note No. 17, May 14, 2019).
At the local level, racing events off-stadium It also occupies an important place with 350 events held in 2024 (source: Sport Pro, 2024 race results, https://www.sportpro.re/resultats). This offering is supported by growing demand due to a large number of participants. Indeed, in Réunion, running represents the 4theme physical and sporting activity, representing 13% of declared practitioners on the island according to the 2021 regional physical and sporting activity survey (S. Cubizolles et al. (2022), Physical and sporting practices in Reunion. Regional Council of Reunion, page 56).
The racing sector off-stadium This constitutes a strategic sector in full expansion on which the Events and Territorial Sustainability track: trail running, raids, orienteering, combined racing activities, etc. wishes to position itself.
- A master's degree program serving institutional policy
The opening of this second course is part of four strategic axes of the institution's training policy:
- A training offer tailored to the local area;
- A professionalization of career paths linked to the economic, ecological and societal transitions of the territory;
- A skills-based approach;
- An increase in international student mobility within the European and Indo-Pacific region.
The launch of a training program dedicated to sports event management and road races primarily addresses a concrete need shared by many local stakeholders. The sports movement has expressed its desire to strengthen its skills to increase its resources (sponsorship, partnerships, subsidies, etc.) and attract more participants (new race formats, audience renewal, etc.) (Regional Sports Conference – Sports Funders, Réunion Island Territorial Sports Project 2024-2029, November 2024, page 23). Similarly, local authorities have identified this sector as a key driver of their economic development and territorial marketing. The need for expertise and professionalization in the field of organizing sporting events and races is evident. off-stadium is therefore at the heart of the expectations of the territory.
The launch of this program addresses the need for professional development in career paths related to the economic, environmental, and societal transitions of the region. Thanks to its interdisciplinary approach and specialized course units, this Master's program allows students to address, in a professional and practical manner, issues related to various transitions, such as the preservation of natural spaces, the evaluation of leisure activities, and the consideration of our Westernized and consumerist lifestyles. Its curriculum will thus actively contribute to supporting the regional demand for a sustainable and resilient territory.
The launch of this program also reflects the institution's ambition to ground university teaching in a clear and practical competency-based approach. The Master's program thus incorporates all the competency blocks listed in the RNCP (National Directory of Professional Certifications) entry for the STAPS (Science and Techniques of Physical and Sports Activities) Master's in Sports Management, which enhances the clarity of the program's learning outcomes for the professional world. Furthermore, the pragmatic nature of sporting events and road races lends itself to numerous practical applications, allowing for continuous interaction between academic knowledge and professional situations, or between academic knowledge and complex skills and practical actions.
Finally, the opening of this program responds to the demand for increased international student mobility. The expansion of the sports events and racing sector except Stadium In the Europe, Indian Ocean, or Indo-Pacific region, internships promote professional development through outgoing student mobility. long The second year of the master's program aims to integrate into sports event networks outside the island, relying on professional networks already established with countries in the area: Mauritius, Rodrigues, Mayotte, Madagascar, Sri Lanka, South Africa, or by integrating into major European and international networks: the international ultra-trail competition (UTMB-World Tour), World Trail MajorsEtc..
Advantages of the training
The Master's program in Sports Management, specializing in Events and Territorial Sustainability: trail running, adventure racing, orienteering, combined running activities, etc., has the primary advantage of benefiting from a university ecosystem already oriented towards the trail running and racing sector. off-stadium .
The 3 internal forces:
- A mature research environment
Indeed, since the 2000s, the University of Reunion Island and its research laboratories have focused on the dissemination of outdoor physical and sporting activities and the expansion of "off-track" races on the island and in the Indian Ocean region. Thanks to this scientific environment, students will be able to benefit from research projects around these themes (funded internships, international mobility, co-supervision, etc.);
- Internal training resources
Furthermore, the University of Reunion Island offers several courses focused on trail running and racing. off-stadium : the University Diploma (DU) Trail, the Optional Teaching Units (UEO) Trail. These courses are internal resources on which the master relies to attract new students and to strengthen its professional network (experts, organizations, internships, etc.);
- An attractive university sports environment for running
Finally, the University Service for Physical and Sports Activities (SUAPS) at the University of Reunion Island is heavily involved in trail running and racing activities. outside the stadium. He organized the 2022 French University Trail Running Cup and participates every year in university championships and major races in the southwest Indian Ocean region. This involvement enhances the appeal of the master's program by offering students a dynamic sporting environment focused on running events.
The 3 external forces:
- Lack of competition and originality of the course program
At the national level, there is no Master's degree in Sports Management specifically dedicated to race event management. off-stadiumThe specialization offered by the University of Reunion Island therefore has no direct competition. This lack of substitutability constitutes a major advantage that reinforces the originality and attractiveness of the training program;
- Local event resources with an international dimension
Reunion Island has a long tradition of racing events off-stadium Among these events, the Grand Raid of La Réunion is an essential reference in the world of ultra-trail running. Created in 1989, it is now one of the four biggest races on the international ultra-trail circuit and constitutes a resource for the master's program by enhancing the local and international dimension of the training;
- Development potential in the Indian Ocean and Indo-Pacific region
The Indian Ocean region, particularly the southwest, is experiencing a significant increase in the availability of off-track running. The countries in this area have recognized the value of developing these activities to revitalize their territories while respecting local ecosystems. This context presents an opportunity for the Master's program, which plays a technical support role for local initiatives and contributes to the structuring of this sector at the regional level.
