Training summary

The Bachelor's degree in chemistry is a general, experimental and theoretical training, which is a continuation of the training in chemistry in secondary education and provides fundamental and applied training in chemistry, a prerequisite for continuing studies in a Master's or engineering school or even professional integration at a technician level. Disciplinary courses are taught over three years, divided into two semesters, with progressive specialization. The teaching units (UE) of chemistry of this License are common to the License Access Santé (L.AS) Chemistry, from License 1 to License 3.
This training can be combined with another Bachelor's degree or a University Diploma (DU).

Training aims

The disciplinary courses delivered in the fundamental and applied fields of chemistry (general chemistry, organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, theoretical chemistry) also make it possible to address concepts presenting the current issues of fundamental research and their applications (health, energy, green chemistry, sustainable development, nanotechnology, etc.).
In accordance with the national framework, candidates for a Bachelor's degree in chemistry are expected to have skills:

  • scientists, particularly in physics-chemistry and end-of-year mathematics

  • methodological and behavioral to ensure the achievement of learning

  • written and oral communication (including a foreign language at level B).

Advantages of the training

The training program is spread over three years, subdivided into semesters, with progressive specialization. The first year corresponds to the implementation of a specific welcome in chemistry. The first part of semester 1 corresponds to an integration phase for the student. The first year allows, particularly during the first semester, to consider reorientations between majors. From the second year onwards, training is mainly disciplinary, with the teaching units representing at least 240 hours of chemistry per semester. The third year corresponds to increased specialization and in-depth study, allowing continued studies towards a Master's degree in chemistry or at the chemistry interface or another orientation.

Fundamental training in chemistry is provided, allowing professional integration, at technician/assistant engineer level, but also continuation of Master's studies ensuring subsequent professional integration at manager/engineer level. Students applying for secondary school teaching competitions: Certificate of Aptitude for Secondary Education Teaching (CAPES), and the Certificate of Aptitude for Professional High School Teaching (CAPLP), will have to acquire a bi-disciplinarity in chemistry and physics, complementing their main training in chemistry with additional training in a Bachelor's degree in physics.

In parallel with the disciplinary training in chemistry, transversal teaching units are included in the course: pre-professional course including two internships (License 2 and License 3), modern foreign language course (English), digital culture course. In addition, in order to enrich and personalize your bachelor's degree training, it is obligatory to validate an Opening Transversal Teaching Unit (UEO) each semester. Furthermore, it is possible for a student to complete part of their Bachelor's degree via mobility abroad, thanks to various exchange programs, while being registered at the University of La Meeting.

Summary of lessons by course

There is no route. The courses offered are at Bachelor's level, in organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, analytical chemistry, theoretical and physical chemistry, modern language and digital skills. This training allows the acquisition of disciplinary and transversal skills.

Two internships: in License 2 and in License 3

Specific devices

License 1 chemistry – Health Access (L.AS – Health Access License).

  • The students of this course are intended to follow the courses of the Chemistry Degree as well as the courses in health offered by the UFR Santé of the University of Reunion.

  • Students enrolled in the Health Access course are intended to apply for the entrance exams to study Medicine, Midwifery, Odontology and Pharmacy.


Access to L.AS Chemistry is also possible in the second year.

Conditions of access to training

Bachelor's degree or equivalent

Continuing Studies

At the end of the three years of the Bachelor's degree, students will be able to implement scientific methodologies allowing them to understand and resolve various problems in the fields of chemistry and at the interface with other disciplines.

Graduates can apply for jobs as level II technical managers or assistant engineers in various sectors of industry and in university or hospital research laboratories: petrochemicals, materials, agri-food, pharmacology, cosmetology, environment (pollution/depollution ), scientific police, ... .

Master (partially outside Réunion)

Graduate students can access, upon application and/or interview and subject to availability, any Master's degree in chemistry or the chemistry interface, at the University of La Réunion or in another French university.

Engineering schools (Réunion and outside Réunion)

Students can choose the parallel admissions route to become an engineer without going through the CPGE. License students (License 2 or License 3) can join a first year or a third year for post-baccalaureate schools which offer a 5-year course - in certain general or specialized schools, the chemistry major being eligible for access to engineering schools via route B.
