The Bachelor of Arts exercises students' critical faculties, their aptitude for analysis, synthesis and argumentation. It allows students to acquire a general knowledge of literature and the arts and to consolidate their knowledge of languages ​​(French, Latin and medieval languages ​​and modern languages).

• The Bachelor of Arts offers a diversification of skills through de facto interdisciplinary training – which also regularly calls on knowledge from other human and social sciences.


• As a result, it truly trains the constitution of a humanist culture, open to the world and above all made efficient by the formation of a true critical mind, as enlightened as possible: through knowledge, but also methods.


• Pedagogically, it is based on a classic progression with a License 1 which aims not only to consolidate the acquired knowledge of baccalaureate graduates, but also to introduce students to the different disciplinary fields of literature. Then, License 2 and License 3 refine the specialization of students, while opening the scope of their skills towards possible continuations, integration into the professional environment or continued studies.

The objectives of the training correspond to the skills in the RNCP sheet:

• Identification of a question within a disciplinary field: several disciplinary fields (the different fields of literature, French, general and comparative, as well as linguistics)


• Analysis of a question by mobilizing disciplinary concepts: problematizing a micro-reading, the study of a work, a linguistic approach


• Implementation of methods and tools from the disciplinary field: linguistic, grammatical, stylistic, socio-linguistic tools, from the different critical schools


• Digital and digital uses: written and oral use of the most common tools (word processing, document editing, etc.)


• Use of data for analysis purposes


• Written and oral expression and communication


• Positioning in relation to a professional field: teaching, research, documentation, communication


• Responsibility action within a professional organization: in particular through the minor professional teaching units and the internship.

Teaching in the “major” relates to three main disciplinary fields: French and Francophone literature, general and comparative literature, and linguistics. Each of these fields is itself the subject of specializations.
In French and French-speaking literature, the aim is first of all to consolidate the students' knowledge in the field of literary history, in connection with the political history, arts and ideas. The field applies from the heritage of Antiquity to the present day, in each of the main genres.  In License 2, it is approached in a more specialized way by period and in connection with literary theories.
But this approach is also geographical: thus French-speaking literature is first studied through its geographical areas, before gradually becoming more theoretical and studied within the framework of concepts such as identity or cultures in License 2 to know a real specialization around the notion of interculturality in License 3.
General and comparative literature is first the subject of an initiation in License 1, through the notions of myths and societies. The Teaching Units (UE) of License 2 then address theory and key concepts such as otherness, leading to a real specialization in License 3.
Linguistics in the broad sense brings together different fields, starting with grammar, is part of the consolidation of mastery of the French language and its analysis, but it is itself the subject of a refinement of skills throughout. throughout the License. But from License 1, students are introduced to linguistics proper, namely the study of language as an object based on theories of language applied mainly to French. Like other fields, this area is the subject of theoretical and practical in-depth study, notably through the study of sociolinguistics in License 2 and pragmatics in License 3. Finally, at the crossroads of literary studies and of linguistics, in License 2 and License 3, students are invited to discover and then deepen stylistics.
In addition to these "major" courses, there is the possibility of taking Latin, Modern Foreign Languages ​​(LVE) of your choice, but also minors offered by the department, in a most often interdisciplinary perspective, offering either new angles ( literature and sciences) sometimes linked to creative practice, i.e. in-depth studies: thus, the knowledge acquired in image analysis and “cinema” (majors) can be deepened in minors.
