Description of the WEU
Discover the unique flora of Reunion Island, between botanical treasures, natural heritage and conservation issues.
This course offers the opportunity to discover the richness of the indigenous and endemic flora of Reunion Island, the natural environments that shelter it and the scientific heritage bequeathed by Thérésien Cadet, in particular the University arboretum.
The EU is based on practical field training and classroom sessions.
– The University arboretum provides an initial support for the study of the flora of Reunion Island and for understanding the concepts of biodiversity, endemism, nature conservation and the dissemination of knowledge about the island's natural and cultural heritage.
– A trip to the tropical forest will allow you to learn about the main botanical species, their natural history, their habitat as well as the threats to the native flora (invasive exotic species).
– These concepts will be explored in depth in class and put into practice during classroom sessions using various materials, flora, identification guides, herbariums, etc.
The EU also plans meetings with the associative actors of Reunion who carry out actions for the conservation of natural ecosystems and environmental education, starting with the associations present on the campus, the students and the university colleagues who carry out actions to safeguard the natural and cultural heritage.
