Description of the WEU
Overseas includes the territories of the French Republic far from mainland France. Overseas athletes have for a very long time made it possible to make these territories far from France known. These territories are considered “lands of champions” for the influence of France during the Olympic Games. These sporting practices are today experiencing exceptional popularity and they are at the crossroads of important issues for these territories.
The objective of this teaching unit is to examine the governance of sports between these territories and the French State? What are the challenges and limits of the development of sport in French overseas territories? What are the prospects for the development of sport overseas with the organization of the 2024 Olympic/Paralympic Games in Paris? Case studies will complete the analysis in order to contribute to understanding the evolution of sport in overseas society.
