Messrs Jean-Pierre CAMMAS, Director of OSUR, deputy to the Scientific Director and CNRS referent in Reunion as well as Joël VAN BAELEN, Director of LACy moderated this institutional meeting of importance for our structures.

Structures which benefit from a solid partnership materializing on a daily basis via the joint research units (UMR) within which we collaborate, but also through participation in large-scale joint projects, such as the ICCARIO.

The Indian Ocean region is at the heart of contemporary challenges, in terms of environmental transition and geopolitical issues linked to the Indo-Pacific axis. The impacts of climate change are central: ecological, health, agricultural, economic, social and political. In this region particularly exposed to natural and atmospheric risks, resilience requires a concerted response from research, education and innovation stakeholders, in close synergy with the economic world and public decision-makers.

ICCARIO (Institute of Climate Change and Resilience in the Indian Ocean) is an innovative response to these challenges. Supported by the University of Reunion in partnership with the major players in the French ESRI of the Indian Ocean, ICCARIO proposes to pool these assets, and to rely on the unique opportunities offered by the basin and its islands to mitigate climate change and prevent associated risks. ICCARIO will be a distributed, multi-actor institute, bringing together the University of La Réunion, academic partners (CUFR Mayotte, École supérieure d'art de La Réunion, École supérieure d'architecture de La Réunion), organizations and research partners (CNRS, Ifremer, Inserm, Météo France, CHU, CYROI), local authorities (CIVIS, Department of La Réunion, French Southern and Antarctic Lands, City of Tampon), and socio-economic partners (Technopole Mayotte, CRESS La Réunion , CMA La Réunion, Qualitropic). Planned over 10 years, it is deployed on the scale of a geographical basin by initiating a process of structuring the ESRI respecting the trajectory of its partners.

Our establishment also fully participates in the deployment of the CNRS overseas research roadmap. Soon, a building dedicated to OSUR activities and a House of Human Sciences of the Indian Ocean will see the light of day.
