UE3 – An Introduction to the Natural Environments and Society of Reunion Island is a new course (25 hours, 3 ECTS) offered by the Maison des Langues and the International Relations Department to visiting ERASMUS+ students. The teaching and assessment of the course is done entirely in English.

For this first year of courses, 38 visiting students from different countries registered (Germany, United Kingdom, Switzerland and Luxembourg).

The UE3 course includes a taught program (18 hours) and a full-day excursion.

The taught program consists of a series of thematic seminars (1,5 to 2 hours each) given by specialists in the field:

  • Dominique STRASBERG (FST, UR) Diversity of life and uniqueness of the biota;
  • Sébastien JAQUEMET (FST, UR) Pelagic megafauna: sharks;
  • Lucie PENIN (FST, UR) Coral reefs and coastal habitats;
  • Valentin DUFLOT (LACy, UR) Atmospheric dynamics, cyclones and climate change;
  • Laurent MICHON (FST, UR) Geology: the rise and (future) fall of Reunion Island;
  • Claudine AH-PENG (CIRAD, UR) Tropical forests, cloud forests and epiphytes;
  • Matthieu SALIMAN (DEAL Reunion) Conservation issues, biological invasions;
  • Philippe HOLSTEIN (Nexia Agency) History of societies and sustainable development;
  • Anne-Lise HEROLD (National Park) The forest of Mare Longue and the National Park.

For the end-of-course evaluation (December 3 & 4, 2020), small groups of students will make oral presentations on specific topics proposed by subject specialists.
