The University of Réunion Island hosted the graduation ceremony for the University Diploma (DU) in Republic and Religions this Tuesday, October 14, at 14:30 p.m. The event took place in the halls of the Réunion Island Prefecture, in Barachois, in the presence of institutional representatives, religious leaders, members of the Interreligious Dialogue Group, and graduates surrounded by their loved ones.

Created in 2016, this unique diploma at the University of Réunion is part of an approach to understanding religion, the values ​​of the Republic, the foundations of secularism and interreligious mediation.
Its objective: to promote dialogue, mutual understanding and living together within a plural society.

It will be aimed at a diverse audience—secularists, religious leaders, civil servants, social workers, students, business executives, chaplains, and retirees—who wish to gain a better understanding of the republican framework and the societal issues related to the plurality of beliefs. This training is mandatory to become a chaplain.

An exemplary success rate

The 2024/2025 edition has 12 graduates, showing a success rate of 100%, as does the 2023/2024 class (10 graduates).

Since its creation, the Republic and Religions DU has recorded a high success rate, a testament to the rigor of the curriculum and the dedication of its students. Mr. Thierry Malbert, university professor, is the academic director.

Civil and civic training

  • The contextualized approach to religious fact in Reunion and in France, in its historical and sociological dimensions;
  • Secularism and the law, through an analysis of the international, national and local legal framework;
  • Interreligious dialogue and mediation, to promote mutual understanding and social cohesion.
