Africa-Europe dialogues around an Afropean university project led by the University of La Réunion

This weekend in Mauritius, young people from the islands of the region (Comoros, Mayotte, Madagascar, Reunion and Seychelles), from East Africa (Kenya, Tanzania and Mozambique), from Europe and from Mauritius gathered for three days to create, imagine, explore and question new possible dialogues between Africa and Europe.

Citizens, artists, teachers, researchers, intellectuals, heads of public institutions or civil society organizations, worked on possible projects.

This program has been developed over recent months through an inclusive and participatory approach bringing together more than fifty young people – Mauritians, but also other nationalities, notably students or professionals based in Mauritius – during two days of reflection.

From these discussions four areas of programming emerged: Arts and cultures without borders, Being here and/or there, Thinking differently about Africa-Europe borders and The island as a laboratory for thinking about the world.

The University of La Réunion, represented by Professor Anne-Françoise ZATTARA, Vice-President Europe, international & regional cooperation, the international mobility project manager Karine SALIMAN and 2 international students.

led the workshop dedicated to the creation of an Afropean university. In the form of a world café, this workshop created a space for dialogue to question new university models. Four groups for four questions: What is an Afropean university? What would its missions be? How can we integrate the current challenges of digital, ecological and demographic transition? How could this university actively contribute to issues of mobility, inclusion, ecological transition and digital transition?
