Discovery of the “Thrésien Cadet” Arboretum on the Moufia campus (Saint-Denis)

An arboretum is a specialized botanical garden, usually designed as a landscaped area. It presents numerous species of trees or woody species in the form of collections, most often thematic. During the construction of the University of Reunion Island in the 70s, Professor Thérésien Cadet initiated the construction of the botanical garden which he named “Arboretum”. The Arboretum brings together many species of endemic and native flora of Reunion Island. As Reunion Island is part of a biodiversity hotspot, with a high rate of endemism, many plant species are currently in danger. This is where the arboretum takes on its full meaning because it allows both preserve rare species of Reunion’s floral heritage and make it accessible to the uninformed public.
