The University of La Réunion welcomes 50 students for the start of the second cycle of medicine

Medical students no longer have to leave Reunion Island to complete their university studies. With the opening of the second cycle for this 2023 academic year, the University of Reunion will be able to issue the advanced training diploma in medical sciences (DFSAM) from 2026. This Thursday, August 17, 50 first-year students were welcomed in all new premises for the Faculty of Health, on the Terre Sainte university campus.

In the presence of the President of the University of La Réunion, Professor Frédéric MIRANVILLE and the Dean of the Faculty of Health, Professor Bérénice DORAY, the 50 first year students of the DFSAM were welcomed in the new buildings of the Faculty health. They inaugurate the opening of the second cycle in Reunion (i.e. their 4th, 5th and 6th years of studies) but also the bioclimatic buildings of the Terre Sainte campus.
Until last academic year, these students continued their second cycle courses in mainland France.

The second cycle of medicine: A major advance for the territory

“Opening this second cycle is a major step forward for the territory which will allow our
Faculty of Health to become a full-service faculty, comments Professor Frédéric MIRANVILLE, President of the University of La Réunion. This opening constitutes a considerable lever to increase the attractiveness of the University Hospital and the Faculty of Health in the Indian Ocean zone, better respond to specific health needs with professionals from these territories, facilitate the professional career of Reunion students and the area and support them throughout their course and in their installation project in areas poorly equipped with health professionals.

A health hub in the Holy Land

The Faculty of Health, created in 2012, is the youngest Faculty of Health in France. It is the only French public health training structure in the Indian Ocean region, currently counting nearly 2000 students. After the establishment of the IUT of Reunion Island and the Réunion Indian Ocean Engineering School (ESIROI), the Faculty of Health opens its doors for the start of the school year in August 2023 and aims to be a “hub” where people will rub shoulders in a manner synergistic training and research, close to the University Hospital and within original bioclimatic infrastructures. Until last year, the students were divided into a multi-site configuration between Bellepierre and Moufia and on the Tampon and Saint-Pierre sites. With the grouping of health sectors in the Holy Land, links between health stakeholders will be fostered.
Graduate students can thus begin their training in good conditions, which combines theory at university and practice within the University Hospital and more generally in the establishments of the Indian Ocean Territorial Hospital Group (GHT). This return to school is therefore historic in favor of the training of Reunion health professionals.
