The University of Reunion and the National University of the Maldives engage in historic cooperation

This is the first time that a French university has signed a cooperation agreement with a higher education establishment in the Maldives. Signed this Monday, August 28, it will notably make it possible to promote the mobility of students and teachers between institutions and to collaborate on research themes common to the two territories.

This Monday, August 28, in the presence of Professor Frédéric MIRANVILLE, President of the University of La Réunion and Professor Anne-Françoise ZATTARA, Vice-President Europe, International and regional cooperation on the Moufia campus and – by video conference from the Maldives – from the Vice-Chancellor of the National University of the Maldives (MNU), Dr Mohamed SHAREEF, under the aegis of the French Embassy in the Maldives, the University of La Réunion and the National University of the Maldives signed a historic framework agreement for the two institutions.

This partnership is the first ever signed between a French higher education establishment and a Maldivian university. Driven by a common desire to establish and develop closer cooperative relations in the fields of higher education and research, in a spirit of mutually beneficial partnership, the two institutions are initiating a privileged collaboration aimed at promoting exchanges and mobility for students, teacher-researchers and technical staff.

Over two academic years (until July 2025), this agreement also aims to develop joint training programs, the joint scientific direction of research work, the facilitation of access to scientific and educational knowledge or the joint organization of symposia, conferences, seminars and training courses. short-term programs such as summer programs.

Three areas of training and research specific to the two territories are particularly targeted, namely tourism, disaster management and climate change.

“This signature is in line with the strategy of the University of La Réunion and opens an even wider field of possibilities in the Indian Ocean. This is historic for our establishment, the first higher education establishment in France to establish this type of partnership in the Maldives.

Frédéric MIRANVILLE, President of the University of La Réunion
