Presentation, objective(s):

The purpose of the PLANTIN project is to take stock of the dye plants of Reunion Island and to validate the concept of using natural dyes and pigments extracted from Reunion's terrestrial biodiversity to open up prospects for economic development for the territory, in order to propose new natural sources of dyes which can be applied in the textile, food, cosmetics and/or pharmaceutical industries. The project, led by the CHEMBIOPRO laboratory of the University of Reunion in collaboration with various partners, aims to inventory and screen the dye plants of Reunion and to select around ten species to evaluate the dyeing potential (dye of textiles and natural fibers by dyes extracted from plants), biotechnological in the field of industrial coloring (production of a new food coloring, coloring of cosmetic products, products for pharmaceutical use) and the pharmaco-toxicological activities of the pigments extracted from these plants.

  • Objective 1: Discover the wealth of dye plants in Reunion and estimate their deposit
  • Objective 2: Extract dyes from bark, leaves, etc., study the yield of coloring extracts, analyze their “coloring power” and the stability of the coloring, in order to select around ten plants of interest
  • Objective 3: Characterize more precisely the physicochemical and pharmacotoxicological properties of the coloring extracts of plants of interest to retain 3 target coloring extracts with potential economic development for the territory
  • Objective 4: Promote new and innovative applications of these dye plants from Reunion Island with a view to supporting their possible use in the different targeted application areas. Conduct market research to identify suitable prospects.
