Responding to a request expressed both by public authorities and by various religions, the University of Reunion offers the university diploma (DU) “Republic and religions”.

This DU opened for the first time in 2016, with the support of the Directorate of Reception, Integration and Citizenship of the Ministry of the Interior. It is mandatory for all prison chaplains, regardless of their faith. Aiming to meet the needs of current society on subjects linked to religions and secularism, it is part of a logic of civic and citizen training.

The training is aimed at all students interested in the subject, religious executives of different religions, leaders of religious associations, chaplains and ministers of religion who have recently arrived on French territory as well as public officials concerned about acquire the keys to a good understanding of religion and the norms governing religious institutions and activities. It is structured around three objectives:

The objectives of this beautiful training

  • Transmit a common base relating to the socio-historical context, law and institutions of France;
  • Provide instruments to facilitate the management of personnel and religious institutions;
  • Promote knowledge of religion and more particularly of the religions established on French territory, particularly with regard to their organization and their doctrines.

Its content is based around teaching on the history and religious sociology of France and its policies on integration or the main principles of religious law: secularism/neutrality, equality/non-discrimination, freedom of conscience and of worship (freedom of religion) but also the private law of religions and in particular family law and labor law, the administrative law of religions and the standards governing the organization of religions: regime of religious associations, buildings of the religion, status of ministers of religion and taxation of religions.
