On Friday, May 9, 2025, the University of Réunion officially inaugurated its new climbing wall, installed in the Max Raffini gymnasium on the Moufia campus. The ceremony was held in the presence of Jean-François Hoarau, president of the university, accompanied by Christophe Porlier, vice-president for digital technology, and Laurent Pequin, information systems officer.
A highlight, placed under the sign of surpassing oneself, memory, and the link between sport, well-being and academic ambition.
Initially completed in September 2023, this project, funded by the University of Reunion and the Student and Campus Life Contribution (CVEC), required several months of patience while security validations were carried out. But since February 2025, the wall has been fully accessible to students.
With its 20 meters in length, its three technical sections, and its 20 to 25 progressive routes, it constitutes an exemplary facility, designed to last and adapt to practices, from level 4b to 7b. It embodies a strong ambition: to make sport a lever for personal development, cohesion and success in the university course.
The presence of Manon Lebon, Olympic athlete, 2022 youth world champion, and a leading figure in speed climbing from Réunion Island, gave this inauguration an inspiring dimension. Her journey, which was met with emotion, embodies surpassing oneself and loyalty to her Réunionese roots.
The ceremony was also an opportunity to pay tribute to Max Raffini, a PE teacher who passed away in 1999. A commemorative plaque was unveiled, in tribute to his commitment to the generations of students he passionately taught.
Finally, this inauguration coincided with the University Academic Challenge, a friendly competition between students from the north and south of the island. A wonderful extension of the day, in the spirit of a university sport that is competitive, team-oriented, and educational.
