After more than half a century of political struggle, the island of Mayotte, French land for 170 years, became on March 31, 2011 the 101st French department and the 5th overseas department.

Located in the Comoros archipelago, 1435 km from Reunion Island, this narrow territory of 374 km² remains today the least advanced French region economically and socially. The challenges to be met are numerous: poverty, immigration, unemployment, environment, etc. Even if the prospects for improvement are real, in particular through accession to OR status since 2014, difficulties remain.

This WEU draws up an inventory of this latest addition to the French departments. Through its interdisciplinary positioning, the teaching offers a global analysis of the specificities of Mayotte. The themes covered are numerous and varied and reveal the many challenges that this department will face in the coming years.
