Description of the WEU
This elective course offers an exploration of current national and international events through print, digital, and audiovisual media, in both French and English. Its aim is to enable students to better understand major contemporary issues, while strengthening their linguistic and analytical skills.
Using press articles from various international media (French-language, English-language, European and global press), students learn to read, compare and analyze information from a critical and intercultural perspective.
The main objective of this elective course is to train independent and informed readers of world news. In a context marked by the rapid circulation of information and the proliferation of media sources, it is essential to be able to identify editorial lines, distinguish facts from interpretations, and compare viewpoints. Students are thus encouraged to develop a critical perspective on the media while enriching their understanding of international events.
The teaching activities are based on several complementary formats: reading and analyzing press articles, written summaries, oral presentations, class debates, and contextualization exercises. Particular attention is paid to students' ability to rephrase information clearly and in a structured manner, both in writing and orally, in the two working languages. English is used as the language of comprehension and expression, without requiring grammatical perfection, but with the aim of improving fluency and precision in discourse.
This elective course also allows students to develop essential transferable skills for higher education and the professional world: synthesis skills, critical analysis, argumentation, oral and written communication skills, and the ability to work with multiple and diverse sources. It also encourages cultural awareness and intellectual curiosity by exposing students to various media perspectives.
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to understand and analyze press articles in English and French, summarize the key points of complex information, and highlight differences in media coverage depending on cultural and linguistic contexts. They will also have acquired a better command of international news vocabulary and greater confidence in expressing their reasoned opinions.
This elective course is designed for second- and third-year undergraduate students interested in current world affairs, international relations, media, and intercultural exchange. It does not require specific disciplinary prerequisites but assumes a curiosity about the contemporary world and the ability to read texts in French and English. It thus provides a stimulating learning environment at the crossroads of languages, cultures, and social sciences.
