Description of the WEU
This contemporary culture course examines the role of rock music in German societies between 1945 and 1990. It aims to shed light on the socio-political contexts that influenced the use of this music on both sides of the Berlin Wall. Drawing on an analysis of rock music and the impact of the 1960s counterculture, the course offers a fresh perspective on the social, political, cultural, and aesthetic dynamics that shaped pre-reunification Germany. By combining historical analysis, political reflection, and the study of cultural movements, the course will comparatively examine the reception and adaptation of Anglo-American rock in West and East Germany. Particular attention will be paid to the formation of genres such as Krautrock, socialist rock, and progressive rock, while also incorporating a socio-historical analysis of several emblematic songs.
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to identify the historical context of the emergence of rock music in post-war Europe, particularly in the two German states created in 1949, West Germany and East Germany. They will be able to connect the political evolution of modern industrial societies after 1945 with the rise of an Anglo-American-inspired musical counterculture. They will be able to identify the main characteristics and different styles that contributed to the richness of Krautrock, progressive rock, and socialist rock.
