Study French at the University of Reunion Island

The Maison des Langues Language Centre at the International Relations Office offers international students a French course to improve their French language skills throughout the academic year.

This two to four-hour per week course is designed to support students in their academic reading and writing, listening and speaking skills while studying for their degree at the University of Reunion Island.

This course is credit-bearing: 5 ECTS credit points.

Essential information

Course milestones
(First semester of academic year 2013 – 2014, all dates are subject to confirmation)

• Evaluation test - Friday 23 August 2013
Based on their test result, students are assigned to the group that corresponds to their level: Intermediate (Group 1, 40 hours), Upper Intermediate (Group 2, 36 hours) or Advanced (Group 3, 26 hours).

• Start of class: - August 2013
• Group 1: Tuesday 27 August 2013
•Groups 2 and 3: Wednesday 28 August 2013

• Final examination - November 2013
• Group 1: Tuesday 26 November
• Groups 2 and 3: Wednesday 20 November

Course content
• French as a Foreign Language (FLE)
Students learn how to overcome academic grammar, syntax and vocabulary problems that emerge from their writing and speaking.
Teachers help them develop general French language skills in four key areas: reading, listening, writing and speaking.They use a communicative language teaching approach, which means that students are expected to actively participate in class.

• French for Academic Writing (Techniques d’Expression)
Students learn to think and write successfully in accurate and appropriate academic French and develop their language skills in several key areas, such as writing for essays and dissertations, summarising (résumé), evaluating, synthesising the views of others (synthèse), giving oral presentations (exposés) etc.

Assessment methods
Students are assessed in a variety of ways, including written homework, oral presentations and examinations.
All our courses are taught by highly qualified professional teachers of the French Language who have extensive experience in working with international students.

Apart from French you can also learn Arabic, Chinese, Creole, Hindi, Malagasy and Tamil. Through la Maison des Langues Language Center you can sit for many international language exams such as TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication), TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), CLES (Le Certificat de Compétences en Langues de l’Enseignement Supérieur), DELF (Diplôme d'études en langue française) and DALF (Diplôme approfondi de langue française).
