The French Southern Lands and Seas, Crozet, Kerguelen, Saint-Paul and Amsterdam, included on the UNESCO World Heritage List, are the largest of the rare emerged lands of the southern Indian Ocean. Far from centers of human activity, they have remained sanctuaries of biodiversity. They are home to one of the highest concentrations and diversity of seabirds in the world, as well as one of the largest populations of marine mammals. Their very productive waters form a nourishing “oasis” for these species. This wild and abundant nature within grandiose volcanic landscapes forges the exceptional character of the property. The immensity of these territories and their classification as a national nature reserve ensure the long-term maintenance of these species and the protection of this unique natural heritage.
