Master – Language Sciences

The training aims to acquire the fundamental notions of language sciences and the principles and methods of analysis of theoretical and general linguistics, with emphasis on the sociolinguistic dimension. The issues of linguistic and cultural heterogeneity, complex language contact phenomena, linguistic minority and language policies will be widely addressed.

The training also includes elements of linguistics applied to the school field, to language acquisition issues and to the issue of illiteracy. The Master's degree in language sciences is centered on the multilingual context of the Reunion territory, with a particular interest in questions of creolistics and everything linked to language and regional culture. It meets a strong demand not only in Reunion, but more generally in the Indian Ocean zone, with exchanges and partnerships in the countries of the zone: Seychelles, Comoros, Mayotte, Madagascar. This training has a multidisciplinary dimension since courses in anthropology, history, geography, etc. are proposed in order to better understand the context of the research.

The training aims to acquire fundamental elements of knowledge in language sciences, and more specifically in general linguistics, French linguistics, creolistics and sociolinguistics. This training covers the different components of languages: phonology, lexicon, morphosyntax, semantics, pragmatics, etc. This basic training is enriched by lessons in observational linguistics (corpus collection, etc.), and also descriptive and explanatory. A focus on the issues of heterogeneity on the Reunion Island terrain will be proposed and will make it possible to identify the phenomena of language contact and to understand the linguistic policy pursued, the strategies of domination and identity demands. A comparison with other situations of language contact will be made and in particular with the Indian-Oceanic territories.
On a methodological level, the Master's degree in language sciences aims to train students to be rigorous in their work and their productions, but also autonomous and creative and promotes teamwork, taking decisions. initiative and reflexivity.
In order to better understand the context of the research carried out, notions, tools and approaches from other disciplines will also be proposed (anthropology, history, geography, etc.)

• Multidisciplinary and contextualized training: fundamentals of different branches of language sciences contextualized to the territory and teaching in regional Creole cultures and languages ​​are provided. Teaching in anthropology, geography, history, letters, etc. (minors) are also offered


• An important place for research: the methodology teaching units provide various tools and approaches for investigations. Master 2 and doctoral students take part in these courses in order to ensure a better link between Master 1 and Master 2. Participation in scientific events is valued each semester and the research dissertation occupies an important place. A methodology seminar in which doctoral students in language sciences and anthropology will participate is also planned to ensure the link between Master and Doctorate. Master’s students attend monthly doctoral student seminars


• Strong use of digital technology: various activities on the Moodle educational platform are offered. Training in corpus processing software (written and oral) is planned and spelling skills are reinforced using a self-training platform linked to certification provided by a private company. The opportunity for certifications during PIX training is offered


• A policy to strengthen modern languages. The most widely used Modern Foreign Languages ​​(EFL) (English, Spanish, Portuguese, German) but also those adapted to the environment (Creole and Malagasy) are offered.


• A policy of welcoming foreign students implemented whether within the framework of European and North American exchange programs or outside mobility programs (students from Seychelles, Mauritius, Madagascar …). Master 1 or Master 2 students during their Master's course can also study in different European, North American, South African, Australian and New Zealand universities.


• Favored professionalization: contacts with the professional world: socio-economic and cultural actors intervene in several Teaching Units (UE) of the training. An important place is given to the internship (120 hours).


• Devices to help with success and ambition to support training: teaching units aimed at facilitating writing and oral practices, several teaching units on methodology, a personalized assessment by the teaching team and a personalized project are offered.
  Qualitative assessments giving rise to a conclusion statement and training adjustments are developed using development advice.
