Training summary

Master's degree in training through and research in information and communication sciences supported by the Research Laboratory on Creole and Francophone Spaces (LCF).

The courses are taught by teacher-researchers (communication theories, methods, empirical studies) and by associated professionals (journalism, communication, cultural mediation) and business professionals.

An important place is reserved for internships in a professional environment and the writing of a research dissertation.

Training aims

The training aims to develop students' critical thinking regarding their understanding of social phenomena of information, communication and cultural mediation, their histories, their contexts.

It aims to train professionals in journalism, communication and cultural mediation by giving them the opportunity to develop skills and the reflective conditions for their implementation.

Advantages of the training

The desire to offer Reunionese students general training in Information, Communication and Cultural Mediation responds to a pragmatic constraint of our training context (insularity, distance from the Metropolis) which explains the low mobility of our students but also the existence of a real employment pool in these three areas, even though qualified jobs can elude Reunion students due to lack of qualifications. This is an essential territorial issue to take into account.

Based on feedback, we note that the employment pool of the geographical area may on the contrary suggest that this general aspect allows students to adapt to a very diverse and changing professional environment. Technical hyperspecialization in these professions can very quickly prove obsolete.
Almost all of Reunion's press, communication and cultural mediation companies have a direct link with the department, either in the form of educational interventions or in the form of internships agreed with the University of Reunion.
Part of the cultural mediation lessons are provided within the framework of agreements with the Directorate of Cultural Affairs of the Indian Ocean and the Regional Health Agency (Artists at the Hospital project) and one with the Institute of Research and Development (ePop project Petites Ondes Participatives, IRD-France Média Monde).

Targeted skills

These are professional skills specific to each field of specialty (research, journalism, communication, cultural mediation):

  • Advanced and specialized uses of digital tools: identify digital uses and the impacts of their evolution; use advanced digital tools independently

  • Development and integration of highly specialized knowledge: mobilizing highly specialized knowledge, some of which is at the forefront of knowledge in a field of work or study, as a basis for original thinking; develop a critical awareness of knowledge in a field and/or at the interface of several fields; solve problems to develop new knowledge and new procedures and integrate knowledge from different fields; make innovative contributions through high-level exchanges and in international contexts; conduct a reflective and distanced analysis taking into account the issues, problems and complexity of a request or situation in order to propose adapted and/or innovative solutions in compliance with regulatory developments.

  • Specialized communication for knowledge transfer: identify, select and critically analyze various specialized resources to document a subject and synthesize this data for use; communicate for training or knowledge transfer purposes, orally and in writing, in French and in at least one foreign language

  • Support for transformation in a professional context: manage professional or study contexts that are complex, unpredictable and require new strategic approaches; take responsibilities to contribute to professional knowledge and practices and/or to review the strategic performance of a team; lead a project (design, management, team coordination, implementation and management, evaluation, dissemination) that can mobilize multidisciplinary skills in a collaborative framework; analyze your actions in a professional situation, self-evaluate to improve your practice as part of a quality approach; respect the principles of ethics, professional conduct and environmental responsibility.
