The social sciences bring together a set of academic disciplines whose objective is the study of human beings in their environment and in their relationships.

For the Bachelor of Social Sciences at the University of La Réunion, it mainly concerns anthropology, psychology and sociology.

She allows to :

• Become familiar with the main disciplinary fields specific to the social sciences


• Develop multidisciplinary analysis skills (conceptual and methodological) for understanding contemporary societies


• Understand the challenges of education and training


• Acquire the skills necessary to access varied scientific sources relating to social sciences in the fields of sociology, psychology and anthropology

The Bachelor of Social Sciences does not give access to professions in the health and social fields subject to regulation and requiring the acquisition of a State Diploma.

The Bachelor of Social Sciences validates a level of certification achieved by the student and attests to learning outcomes constituting a scientific, methodological, technical and cultural basis for continued studies in a Master's degree or commitment to professional integration.

Students are trained in versatility. Equipped with a multidisciplinary knowledge base, they are introduced to the methods and techniques of investigation of the human and social sciences (observation, interview, questionnaire, content analysis, statistical analysis).

The advantages of the training are numerous, students will be led to:

• Acquire theoretical and methodological tools for multidisciplinary training


• Mobilize the central concepts of the social sciences


• Be able to make an object of study intelligible: problematize, conceptualize and analyze


• Identify and know the currents and authors of sociology and anthropology. Mastering social stratification


• Understand the sociology of Malagasy and Comorian civilizations, describe their evolution in relation to the cultural and historical context


• Identify the field of psychology and its evolution, in connection with the cultural and historical context. Know the stages of the process of internalization of thought in man. Be able to define and use the basic concepts of the main currents of psychology.


• Identify, select and critically analyze various social science resources to document a subject and synthesize this data for use.


• Distinguish the periods and civilizations in the Indian subcontinent. Making the link between the home country and traces of Indianness in Reunion


• Mobilize the theoretical and conceptual tools of the sociology of the family and the anthropology of kinship. Understand and analyze contemporary issues linked to filiation


• Identify the process of production, dissemination and valorization of knowledge from the Social Sciences.


• Understand the issues underlying the polysemous concepts of culture, identity, heritage. Acquire knowledge about identity construction in the creolization process.


• Acquire knowledge expressing interest, curiosity, understanding for the facts, define Indianoceania and the Indian Ocean Commission. Show the links between the different islands of the southwest Indian Ocean, the ideas and thoughts linked to exteriority and otherness.


• Acquire knowledge about human evolution based on scientifically recognized facts.


• Identify and locate the professional fields potentially related to the acquired knowledge of the mention as well as the possible paths to access them.


• Know intercultural mediation techniques. In the field of social relations, define a survey problem, use the necessary tools (development and processing of questionnaires and interviews) and organize a data watch or observatory.


• Identify the field of the anthropology of religions: its emergence, its concepts, its founding and more recent authors, its issues. Highlight what differentiates it from other approaches to religion in the human sciences and particularly religious sciences. Raise awareness of the interest of considering religion from a scientific point of view in the current context of our multicultural societies


• Acquire knowledge on gender issues, know the concepts used in the gender field as well as the main laws of female emancipation.


• Know the concepts used in the sociological field, understand the educational system and the sociological currents of school and family.


• Understand the field of family education and parenting support.


• Know the main concepts of psychology and their relationship to learning. Be able to listen, support and accompany subjects with learning difficulties.


• Define creolization and identify the effects of the process in various cultural situations.


• Easily use the different registers of written and oral expression of the French language.


• Use reference digital tools and IT security rules to acquire, process, produce and disseminate information as well as to collaborate internally and externally.

The Bachelor of Social Sciences offers various courses linked to scientific fields such as sociology, anthropology, psychology and philosophy.

The Bachelor of Social Sciences takes place over 6 semesters and is made up of 55 units

For example: sociology of precolonial civilizations: Comoros and Madagascar, philosophy and social sciences, introduction to anthropology and sociology, introduction to psychology, anthropology of Indian civilization, sources and data in social sciences, humanity and society, anthropology of Indian Oceania: professions in the social sciences, migrations and mobility, sociology and general anthropology, identity, culture and heritage, the fields of social sciences, anthropology and sociology of kinship, ethnology of the Creole spaces of the southwest of the Indian Ocean, methodology and epistemology of research in social sciences, culture and social bond, sociology and anthropology of religion, culture and psyche, gender and society, sociology of education, psychology of learning, cultural creolization in the southwest of the Indian Ocean, parenthood and co-education...

Students who follow the courses of the Bachelor of Social Sciences will be required to acquire content and skills in various fields linked to social, culture, education, mediation on general themes but also in link with issues linked to Reunion Creole society and the cultures and civilizations of the Indian Ocean.

A 70-hour internship is mandatory in the third year.

We indicate a specificity of the first year of the Bachelor of Social Sciences (License 1) within which 3 individualized paths and a health option exist in order to promote student success.

The routes are as follows:

• License 1 Social Sciences – Individualized course 1:
o As part of this individualized course, the first year of the Bachelor's degree is carried out in the classic way in one year

• License 1 Social Sciences – Individualized course 2:
o As part of this individualized course, the first year of the License is also completed in one year. The particularity of this course consists in the fact that methodological support is added to the lessons. Methodological support is mandatory and takes place throughout the year. Several techniques are presented to students in order to be able to implement good university working methods as early as possible.

• License 1 social sciences – Individualized pathway 3:
o As part of this individualized course, the first year of the license is completed in two years. This path is planned to allow students who need it to reduce the workload per year. The lessons of the first year of the license are therefore spread over the two years rather than just one.

• License 1 social sciences – Health Access (Licence Accès Santé - L.AS):
o Students in this course are intended to follow the courses of the Bachelor of Social Sciences as well as courses in health offered by the UFR Santé of the University of Reunion
o Students registered in the Health Access program are eligible to apply for the entrance exams to the studies of Medicine, Midwifery, Odontology and Pharmacy (MMOP)

Please note, however, that certain professions are not directly accessible with a Bachelor of Social Sciences degree. These are professions whose practice is regulated (professional title, Social Action and Families Code, Public Health Code), including: medical-psychological assistant, social life assistant, family assistant, social service assistant, specialized educator, caregiver, childcare assistant, healthcare executive, nurse, doctor, psychologist, etc.
