Presentation

The ED STS relies on and collaborates with twelve research laboratories located in Reunion. The list of these laboratories is available here.

The ED STS brings together numerous scientific disciplines ranging from mathematics fundamental and applied to computer science through atmospheric physics, building physics, environmental physics, energy, electronics, the geosciences, but also theterrestrial ecology,marine ecology,agronomy, chimie, biochemistry, bio-medicine, bioinformatics, health and sciences and techniques of physical and sporting activities.

The thematic scope is therefore extremely vast but very well positioned in the regional and Reunion context. Furthermore, our ED ensures the adequacy between the general research policy of the establishment and the major players in already existing research areas associated with the university. We include in particular the BRGM (Geological and Mining Research Office), the CIRAD (Center for international cooperation in agricultural research for development), Meteo France,  CNRS (National Center for Scientific Research), theINSERM (National Institute of Health and Medical Research), theIFREMER (French Research Institute for the Exploitation of the Sea) or theIRD (Research Institute for Development).

The doctoral school and its partners


The ED STS has a significant opening to the world since it carries out numerous registrations in co-direction with metropolitan universities. She participates in the international RAMI Doctoral College (environmental observations and natural risks in an island environment) directed by Hassan BENCHERIF and led by the University Association of the Francophonie (AUF). It has privileged links with the EBS (Environment, Biodiversity and Health) and OMNCG (Observatory of Natural Environments and Global Changes) Research Federations of the university. Each year it welcomes foreign doctoral students and establishes registrations under joint supervision and co-direction with foreign universities (Madagascar, India, Comoros, Mauritius, South Africa, Tunisia, Morocco, Thailand, Vietnam, China, etc.).

A doctoral student must validate 180 ECTS to be able to defend his thesis.
For doctoral students funded by: CIFRE, employee, joint supervision or long-term stay, the calculation of the number of ECTS will be in proportion to the time spent in the research unit.

The training is based on a choice of modules made by the doctoral student.

Training in research ethics and integrity has been mandatory for all doctoral students since the decree of May 25, 2016. 

Apart from this training, no module is compulsory but the total must reach 180 ECTS.

Each doctoral student can choose modules offered by the doctoral school or other modules.

The choices of modules other than those offered by the ED STS must be validated by the thesis director. 

Doctoral students must register for training offered by the Doctoral School to be able to participate. Validation of ECTS is done by the ED STS after receipt of proof of attendance.

In accordance with article 3 of the judgment of 25/05/2016 which governs doctoral studies, the ED STS council adopted the following provision: "doctoral students who have registered for the first time in thesis in the 'ED STS at the University of Reunion after the 1er September 2016 will only be able to submit part 1 of the defense of their thesis on the condition of having followed training in scientific integrity or research ethics. » Also, the applicant must have participated in at least one training course organized by the ED STS or any other structure (part 1 must then be accompanied by proof of training completion).

For information, two MOOCs are available on FUN (France Université Numérique): “scientific integrity in research professions” set up by the University of Bordeaux (MOOC open all year round, accessible by this link) and “research ethics” created by the University of Lyon (MOOC open only at certain times of the year, accessible by this link).

Preamble on the number of doctoral contracts awarded to the ED STS

The number of Doctoral Contracts awarded to the ED STS is not yet fixed. It will probably be a minimum of 3 CDs to which additional CDs possibly granted by the university could be added. The number of research units attached to the ED STS is currently 17.

Method of awarding Doctoral Contracts

In order to guarantee the quality of doctoral research and optimize the professional integration of future doctors, the Council of the Health Sciences Technology Doctoral School adopted during its plenary session on Thursday February 25, 2016 a method for awarding Contracts Doctoral studies based on excellence, the terms of which are described below.

1°) Call for thesis projects for the ED STS Research Units

This call for tender concerns the laboratories and research units of the ED STS. The ED STS laboratories and research units offer a single thesis project (i.e. a maximum total of 18 projects). This call for tenders will be launched on Monday February 28, 2022.

Laboratories have until Friday April 1, 2022 to submit a thesis project.

2°) Call for applications for M2 students

3°) Selection of candidates by laboratories and research units

The topics are offered to M2s via the DRIVE website from April 4, 2022 and can be disseminated as widely as possible.

The ED STS laboratories and research units select only one candidate per subject.

The choice of laboratories must reach the Doctoral School no later than Monday May 2, 2022.

4°) Audition of candidates

The candidates (one candidate per subject) will be interviewed on June 17, 2022. They will be evaluated on the excellence of their academic background, the adequacy of their training for the thesis project, their motivation and their mastery of the subject.

A ranking will be established and released on June 20, 2022.

Candidates classified in a position to obtain a CD will have until Monday August 22, 2022 to confirm or not their application. In the absence of confirmation or in the event of withdrawal, the next candidate on the list will then be contacted and so on.

The competition will close on Friday September 02, 2022.

The training is based on a choice of modules made by the doctoral student.

In accordance with the decree of May 25, 2016 establishing the national training framework and the modalities leading to the delivery of the national doctoral diploma: 

  • the thesis director cannot participate in meetings of a thesis monitoring committee;
  • thesis monitoring committees are obligatory for all doctoral students, regardless of the year of their first registration;
  • the committee is composed of the director of the research unit on the proposal of the thesis director;
  • the committee includes at least the doctoral student and two people, holders of a Doctorate for at least two years, currently active or with an Emeritus degree, including at least one from outside the doctoral student's research unit;
  • the committee meets once a year from the first year of the thesis;
  • any request for re-registration in a thesis must be accompanied by a duly completed attachment;
  • the committee meeting may, if necessary, be held by videoconference.

According to the decree, the doctoral student must first discuss with the members of his monitoring committee (without his thesis director). The form will be completed solely on the basis of this interview. Following this discussion, a time for discussion between all stakeholders (the doctoral student, the monitoring committee and the thesis director) can take place to allow the thesis director not to be completely excluded from the discussions. 

To conclude, here are some elements relating to the committee calendar for the 2020/2021 academic year:

  • the composition of the thesis monitoring committee must be completed on the doctoral student’s ADUM profile;
  • except for first-time doctoral students, there are no constraints relating to the date of the thesis monitoring committee meeting;
  • the meeting for first-time doctoral students must be held before November 26, 2021

RE-REGISTRATIONS

From the 2ème, riding a 3nd year, registration must be renewed between September 1 and November 30, including :

– when the first registration took place late

– for doctoral students outside the department or abroad 

– within the framework of a joint supervision agreement and therefore exempt from payment of registration fees.

Doctoral students defending their thesis between September et December of an academic year, are covered by their registration in the previous academic year and must not re-register.

Beyond the 3rd registration request, extensions of the thesis preparation period are possible, as an exception. The report of the thesis monitoring committee will be accompanied by a request to the attention of the President.
